British man who tried to help backpacker stabbed in Australia dies

A 30-year-old British backpacker in Australia who was hailed as a hero after he tried to defend fellow Briton during a knife attack at a hostel has died of stab wounds in hospital.

Tom Jackson, from Congleton in Cheshire, was repeatedly stabbed in the head, face and body last Tuesday night by French national Smail Ayad, 29, after rushing to assist Mia Ayliffe-Chung, 21.

The Frenchman had apparently become infatuated with her and grabbed her from her bed and repeatedly stabbed her. Miss Ayliffe-Chung, from Wirksworth, Derbyshire, died at the scene.
