Senior German politicians are considering a partial ban on the burka to counter growing calls for a clampdown on mass immigration by the far right.

Interior minister Thomas de Maiziere admitted he is in favour of a partial ban as the country debates immigration and integration ahead of vital local elections.

The right-wing populist Alternative for Germany party is set to make gains by running on a strongly anti-immigrant platform.
