The myth of NATO – Trump expressed a long-standing frustration of the U.S. with its European military allies

I spent more than eight years of my diplomatic career either at the U.S. Mission at NATO, on the “NATO Desk” at the U.S. State Department, or addressing arms control negotiations with the then Soviets regarding intermediate nuclear force (INF) missiles in Europe.

So I think I have sufficient background to comment on the controversy set off when Republican presidential contender Donald Trump said he would fulfill American commitments to NATO, provided member countries pulled their financial and military weight in supporting the alliance.

  • Hard Little Machine

Obama/Hillary clearly want to turn the armed forces into a European style make-work program filled with slackers, stoners, trannies, criminals and queers. Whether there even IS a NATO or not is besides the point.

    • NATO is not much protection, except perhaps against its own citizens.

“… to restore and maintain the security of the North Atlantic area.”
Ahh, so that’s why NATO wants to expand to the east.
Russia are the good guys now, look at how they treat ethnic Russians.
If only the west would do the same for WASPs, but sadly, the western “leadership” prefers muzz to WASPs.
Of course, our NeoCon/Lib media won’t tell us the truth, so I suggest you look into Transnistria as an example of the Russians promoting stability.
What, you say? No such place as Transnistria?
Funny, NATO won’t recognize a going concern with borders, a legitimate government, etc, that has existed for many years, but recognized the legitimacy of the Soros financed coup in the Ukraine almost instantly.

  • Slickfoot

Screw NATO, the Euro elitists have been buying votes through socialism instead of spending money on their own defense.

    • So have we n Canada.

      • Slickfoot

Don’t progs just love buying votes with other people’s money?

  • I wouldn’t read too much into Trump’s position on NATO. I think he basically wants to collect the rent. Analogous to a landlord who comes banging on your door demanding the rent or else you get evicted. Nine times out of ten the tenant comes up with the rent to avoid eviction.

    • Norman_In_New_York

That’s still an improvement over the present state of the alliance.

    • dance…dancetotheradio

He should collect more than the rent.
      Assert sovereignty over them.

      • I’d certainly prefer being under U.S. sovereignty than E.U. sovereignty.
