GERMANY FIGHTS BACK: Sweeping new powers for police as crack down on terror begins

Under new measures announced by the Christian Social Union (CSU) party in Bavaria – a partner in Mrs Merkel’s coalition government – police will switch to a policy of “security through strength”.

This will include the rolling out of significant new powers including far greater data retention and a “significant” increase in the maximum period for which personal data can be stored, which currently stands at 10 weeks.

In addition a massive programme of recruitment will get under way immediately with the aim of boosting the region’s number of police officers by 2,000 between 2017 and 2020.

    Well, it maybe a start.

I rather like the French idea of recruiting a “reserve”. Get the right people in the reserve and you preserve the Republic.

With Germans I am not entirely comfortable with that.

  • Norman_In_New_York

Nothing here is as effective as mass deportations, which Merkel will never allow.

    • V10_Rob

‘Data retention’ is pointless if you don’t actually do anything with it. How many “known to authorities” attacks have we had now?

  • simus1

Bullshit from the bullshit spinning politicians.
    Heads must roll.
    Oops. Er. Make that:
“The simplest and most effective of measures are needed immediately.”

    Perhaps Germans are arming themselves…..
The military is investigating the theft of arms from a weapons room at U.S. Army Garrison Stuttgart.

More likely muslims than Germans I suspect. Military weapons are extremely well secured. When I was a lieutenant undergoing training 30 odd years ago I had a rifle, pistol, sub machine gun, and light machine gun in my locked up closet in barracks. I don’t know what prompted it but half way through training we were made to turn all our weapons into the quartermaster and after that for the rest of my time in the army we had to sign them out on an as needed basis and turn them in when we were finished with them. On one base I was stationed the alarm system in the weapon lock up failed and we had armed guards patrolling the area until the alarm was repaired. Military weapons don’t go missing unless it’s an inside job. I am sure there are muslim sympathizers in the US army could do something like this.

Funny how that works: the government invites mass numbers of enemies and criminals into the country which — oddly enough! — then requires highly expanded police powers.

    I’m so shocked.

    • Alain

My suspicion is that all these expanded police powers will be used against patriotic Germans instead. To date the police has done just that, so why expect a change.

Of course, we are likely to see some fool in the government to demand either: (a) a more diverse police force wth lowered entry requirements for muslims and Syrians, and/or (b) recruitment of Syrian/North African migrants (legal and illegal) to have a police force with individuals with the same background or language as the citizens they interact with.

With muslims in a police force with enlarged police powers, what could possibly go wrong? Especially when their likely to apply with letters of recommendation from their local imam.

A step in the right direction, or, to little to late?
