Discovery of Philistine Cemetery May Solve Biblical Mystery

An unrivaled discovery on the southern coast of Israel may enable archaeologists to finally unravel the origins of one of the most notorious and enigmatic peoples of the Hebrew Bible: the Philistines.

The discovery of a large cemetery outside the walls of ancient Ashkelon, a major city of the Philistines between the 12th and 7th centuries B.C., is the first of its kind in the history of archaeological investigation in the region.

Philistine Liberation Front?

    Liberation Front of Philistine.

Four thousand years of slings and stones.

The discovery was in 2013, but the archaeologists had to stay silent because orthodox Jewish extremists try to close down any digs that find human remains just in case they’re Jewish remains. They have much the same attitude as “first nations” activists. No scientific logic is entertained.

Everything you wrote is true Tom.

Pardon my stupidity, what motivates “ultra orthodox Jews” to close down such digs?

      • canminuteman

Just a guess, but they I suspect that they object to desecration of the dead. Its a fine line between grave robbing and archaeology.

And of course if the pali death cult found such a site they would certainly destroy it so the reason to keep it secret is understandable.

Let’s see how long before the Pali’s claim that this is proof that they descended from original inhabitants of Ancient Israel – the Philistines.

    • DVult

100 to 1 they’ll claim the Philistines were moslem if asked.

    • Alain

Actually they already made the claim. I recall Arafat making the claim that the “palestininians” are actually the Philistines. Considering there is no P sound in Arabic, it was amusing. I am not sure why it didn’t gain traction, but I clearly recall the attempt.

Gee, a National Geographic report that didn’t blame Global Warming for something. Maybe it’ll make it into the TV show version?

    … aesthetic ingrates!

According to the Hebrew Bible, the Philistines warred with their Israelite neighbors—even seizing the Ark of the Covenant for a time.
