How Cameron lost Brexit

From Politico EU:

Cameron even drafted in Obama to help. The U.S. president’s warnings not to leave failed to move the polls. His intervention in April encouraged more young people to register to vote, but Obama’s blunt remark that Britain would be “at the back of a queue” for a trade deal with America if it left the union irritated many U.K. voters.

“I don’t think we ever thought this was going to be the golden chalice,” one senior source close to the Downing Street operation said, but admitted the campaign operatives were disappointed that Obama didn’t give them a bump. More.

Reality check: The trouble with the EU is that there is no advantage to being a Brit in England. Or Greek in Greece. Or, if admitted, Turkish in Turkey. The big thing to be anywhere is a faceless bureaucrat. And the Big Govs will run everything.

I wonder if the success of the Trump campaign and Brexit, against advice and expectation, stems from a dim recognition on the part of Western peoples that Western governments don’t need them. They don’t need very many people at all (automation) and can get them cheaper somewhere else. – d.
