Glenn Reynolds: An untraditional war

In the wake of the Orlando shootings, people are trotting out the usual post-massacre talking points about gun control, terrorism, etc. But the solutions aren’t so easy.

Gun control is much stricter in Europe, but that hasn’t stopped mass shootings like the ones atCharlie Hebdo’s offices or at the Bataclan concert hall. (It’s also very strict in California, but that didn’t stop the shootings at San Bernardino.) Talking about gun control is mostly a way of avoiding a tough problem.

The gay bar in Orlando was a gun free zone, a lot of good that did.

  • Billy Clint Blanchette

Glenn Reynolds has been a shill for gun owners for years. There is no reason that assault weapons should be available in America. Banning these mass killing guns will not, repeat, not violate the Second Amendment.

    • An unsupported assertion! And with the word “repeat” in it! Well, I’m convinced.

    • Alain

Then you cannot grasp the meaning of the 2nd Amendment, and furthermore assuming that Muslim terrorists and other criminals abide by any gun laws and only use those called legal tells me you have difficulty with reality. Guns are NOT the problem, terrorists and criminals are the problem. Refusing to recognise this will not make it disappear.

      • Didn’t the Paris terrorists and the gunman who held people hostage in a cafe in Australia break some rather strict gun laws?

I certainly hope that Toronto’s mayor won’t have to eat his words. He just told a reporter that Toronto, which is hosting a month-long Pride festival, is the safest city in the world (or something to that effect) — in the wake of a spate of a week of shootings. The last I heard on the news tonite was that the LGBTQ community was battening down the hatches.

        • dance…dancetotheradio

And what’s going to happen if he has to eat his words?

          • Waffle

            Gunfight at the O.K. Corral?

    • infedel

The Second Amendment is against tyranny;not deer
hunting and assault riffles that are defense riffles when they are protecting politicians…and criminals will always have guns. The Second Amendment gave us the Right to fight against a tyrannical government with the same weapons they use to protect themselves.

      Billy Clint
You do realize that in Rwanda 800 000 people were massacred by axes machetes and Spears
Banning semi automatic weapons won’t stop criminals from killing. So unless you want to compel unarmed combat on the population carrYing a gun or knife is prudent

      • UCSPanther

Yugoslavia was also known for its very strict gun laws back in the day. Certainly didn’t stop the shooting when its sundering began in earnest.

    • Alright.

There were no guns in this club and there were no guns in various university shoots. Indeed, there were no guns at Fort Hood- a military base- and though the act was committed by an Islamist terrorist, it was termed “workplace violence” by Obama so as not to pay out benefits for the wounded AND shielded Islamism from the repudiation it richly deserves.

    • Billy Bob Thornton

I agree and people that want more easy access to guns refuse to even acknowledge that such a move will easily result in civil war in the United States. Many simply do not believe that the US is going to collapse on either side. Many are going to blame each side for the inevitable US dollar collapse without ever offering up a credible and real plan to ever get out of this low interest rate policy and soon to be negative interest rates and even Trump supports such a plan.

Independent economists that show up on RT do state clearly and accurately that this is a period of fascism because capitalism in decline leads to it and that is why there are so many anti-immigrant movements. This was bound to happen. Do not forget that capitalism is on a public-supported Ponzi scheme since 2008-09. That is an undeniable fact.

No wonder people are clinging to Messiahs as politicians.

I actually believe the only true way to get out of this financial crisis we are still in is to do an Iceland-style move against the banks and to write off the odious debt which is an internationally recognized strategy that nations can use.

People who are massively pro gun fail to even recognize that the gun environment in the US results in over 10000 people getting killed per year, another fact that many will not want to see who are pro-gun enthusiasts.

The last point to realize is that when the US collapses which seems inevitable the American people will blame the two parties and the two ideologies and not take sides. That will make me smile because it will show conservatism and liberalism have failed!

      • UCSPanther

Fat lot of good gun control did in Yugoslavia. The Yugoslavians were known for their strict laws, but the Balkan Wars made an instant mockery of them.

Maybe you should spend less time watching RT. Soviet-style propaganda is not good for you…

        • Billy Bob Thornton

The Soviet Union has been gone since 1989. You might want to update your world map. It is as passe as your talking points.

          • UCSPanther

Rich, coming from a guy who thinks the Ayatollahs are great.

          • Billy Bob Thornton

I am against them; you just haven’t been seeing what I said on a previous story. The fact is with the Ayatollahs they have a democracy which is locked by them so they cannot be conquered by the US or Israel.

Why do you hate free nations and independent nations?!

          • UCSPanther

Why do you support failing socialist tyrants like Maduro?

          • Billy Bob Thornton

Actually I want a left wing nationalist government for Canada done by using the Bank of Canada and nationalizing the banks but keeping capitalism. All I want in Venezuela is no similar style overthrow like Alliende in Chile in 1973 or Brazil in 2016 with Temer.

          • Billy Bob Thornton

Do not forget that the US had a coup in Ukraine in 2014 around the time of the Sochi Olympics. That alone proves that the US and its versions of democracy are in its own image. They banned in essence the Party of Regions in Ukraine which was pro-Russia and centrist and catch-all centrist and nationalist. That proves that the US hates choice and hates freedom and independence. What I want is Venezuela to not be ruled by US-style hegemony and to truly have closeness to whoever they want. This is about national sovereignty and nations deciding for themselves what they truly want. The US wants slave nations!

        • Billy Bob Thornton

Also, Yugoslavia proved to be a better nation than the balkanized and pro-EU nations in that area. At least they had a strong identity and they were better off closer to Russia.

          • UCSPanther

And Yugoslavia no longer exists. You are the one who needs to update his map…

          • Billy Bob Thornton

I just believe Yugoslavia was better off with a strong man. Which is why democracy has to be truly open which is what I call for all the time.

          • UCSPanther

Strongmen do not last forever, and Yugoslavia did have one in the form of Tito. Once he died, however, Yugoslavia entered a downward slide that could not be stopped.

Yugoslavia was a construct built after WWI, and it was made up of several groups of people who had been bitter enemies for centuries. You cannot expect to have such a nation last for long, especially when ethnic tensions start coming home to roost.

Europe has made that mistake repeatedly by creating nations like Jordan, Iraq and Syria, and they are making the exact same mistake on their own soil in the form of the EU.

          • Billy Bob Thornton

Well that I definitely do agree with.

Sykes-Picot and other constructs along with the Colonial Period did send the world back decades but I think that having more nations does make the world much easier to control.

Which is why for me less nations may probably be better but the general argument is usually that each people should have their own nation. But for me nations can just be placeholders if they do not serve the needs of their peoples correctly and do not have actual freedoms. Other than that, I think that if a nation can create an environment of full employment, standing up for the culture of the nation and serving the needs of the people then it is definitely viable and wanted. Other than that, if a nation does not do that and is a vassal then it is worthless.

That is why the EU is failing by being under the thumb of the ECB and the EU Commission.

Hitler’s dream was a German Europe and that is what the EU is.

          • Minicapt

Hitler would fit your ideal very nicely. All you now need are blonde hair and blue eyes.

            Cheers

            Billy Bob

You do realize that Yugoslavia was the first experiment in forcing disparate peoples into a fake country. Basically it was rewarding the Serbs for starting WWI
During WW II the civil war between the Serb, Croats and Slovenes was fericious only the Spanish Civil War was worst.

Yeah Tito was a Croat but it would’ve been better to have split Yugoslavia to have been broken up back then.Serbia and Croatia have always been different and either one dominating a federation has been disastrous

      • El Martyachi

At least the US has this red/blue state thing where dipshits like you can move to … hell I dunno where but point being there’s nowhere to go in Canada equivalent to a “red state”.

Look, riding the bus would undoubtedly reduce car accident fatalities. Yet hundreds of millions of people wants to pays their money and takes their chances. It’s called freedom, fucknutz.

There’s no bus service to the place where I work.
Eighty klick round trip every day.

          • Justin St.Denis

I did that for about a decade. Thank God for CD players! It was during those years that the vinyl-to-CD transformation occurred. I drove so fucking much that I managed to replace much (approx. 50%) of my 4,000 vinyl album collection to CD. It kept me going. I also discovered that I should never drive a major highway with classic metal music playing loud. It makes my foot very heavy……

I just listen to TSN 1290.
I like their traffic report background music.

Wow! Billy Bob Thornton agrees with himself.

        That is so fuckin’ CUTE!

The Progessive Left does not “avoid tough problems” at all!

The Progessive Left exacerbates tough problems. It’s their strategy. It’s time we took note.

Any solution that does not “neutralize” Saudi Arabia — that is make it wholly non-Sharia complaint — is doomed to fail.

“jihadist strain of Islam” — and unicorns

If a Muslim is literate and agrees to remain Muslim after understanding some elements of Islam then they must be among the “jihadist” strain, or whatever. Stop the denial and obfuscation of clear as day elementary Islam. If it self-identifies as Muslim it remains a threat, even if it will only be their kids, once they learn to read.
