Why Vietnam wants US weapons

As US President Barack Obama announced the lifting of the decades-long embargo on sales of lethal weapons to Vietnam, he seemed at pains to explain the decision “was not based on China or any other considerations”.

Yet his mention of China reveals some of the greatest security concerns brewing in Hanoi.

Since a brief but bloody border war in 1979 that cost thousands of lives, Vietnam-China relations have been bumpy to say the least. From being Vietnam’s biggest ally, ironically, in the war against the United States, China has increasingly been seen as a dominant, and at times, threatening neighbour.

You’ll recall they went to war once before, these “communist bretheren”.

The Vietnamese pasted them even though they were substantially outnumbered by the PLA. The difference this time is the weaponry that China is threatening their immediate neighbors with.

fµck the vietnamese. let the motherfµckers burn.

  • Vietnam will need weapons against China. Vietnam, as well as the Philippines, constantly spar over patches of the South China Sea.

What the whole world needs against China are trade sanctions , China will go into bankruptcy.

No, they’d start rolling into countries within their sphere of influence. Once they get enough oil and gold, they can just make stuff for themselves and keep the peasants happy with more land captured from the conquered countries…and lots of new females for the soldiers.

      • I wish.

But people wanted and still want cheap stuff, so…

I would sell Vietnam the weapons. When two communist countries are at each other’s throats, the rest of the world gains.

    • The war will be over oil.

Who wins if China nearly loses and Vietnam gets wiped out?

      This won’t end well.

Hmm me so the 20 year warranty of national liberation was a total waste in the end eh?

Too bad the French lost the Indochina wars. The Vietnam would’very had 60 years to build up their economy and be better able to stand up to the Chinese

As for the Phillipines the new president appears to want to cut a deal but hopefully he see just how covetous and insufferable the nomenklatura is
