Who is Norbert Hofer and should Europe be worried about him becoming president of Austria?

Norbert Hofer is a 45-year-old aeronautical engineer turned politician for Austria’s far-right Freedom Party (FP0). He is poised to be elected President of Austria today.

How would I pick him out from a crowd?

Hofer is not your traditional right-Wing demagogue.

He is softly spoken – “doe-eyed” as one German newspaper described him, and he walks with a stick following a hand-gliding accident. Oh, and he likes to carry a Glock 9mm pistol with him on the campaign trail.

Well, let’s see how he does after the election. The election of Liberal politicians in many countries has been an utter failure for the success of the many citizens of these nations. They are just leading us all down the drain.

I’m really interested to know how Canada will fare when a huge number of citizens are not paying income taxes but are big consumers of social services.

  • Austrian election result will not be known until Monday

Nearly all votes that have been cast in polling stations have been counted, with two candidates in a dead heat. http://www.itv.com/news/update/2016-05-22/austrian-election-result-will-not-be-known-until-monday/

    “Hand”-gliding accident? I don’t think I need to know… 😉

Jumping out of a window and flapping your arms!

But what is his plan for leaving the EU? To me that is the central thing that should be done right now. Having sanctions on Russia I believe has caused Europe to fall even faster, and for me I believe that Austria needs yes anti-immigration parties but if they promote globalism meaning unrestricted free trade and removing regulations that is being for the things you are supposed to be against. I support protectionism? Is this right wing nationalist a protectionist? I am a left wing nationalist to centrist ideologically speaking. I support reducing immigration but I do not believe that the migrants are solely to blame for the EU faltering.

I blame the EU being a superstate and being a state that followed the US on neoliberalism.

For me the only way Europe can survive with individual nations is for them to have a plan of rebuilding like after WW2.

So is he really a Nazi in disguise?

If you ask the real Nazis, like Jean-Claude Junker and Merkel, they will tell you yes…

    The left love to project.

“he likes to carry a Glock 9mm pistol with him”
    And he buys local!

    • canminuteman

I suspect it’s not so much “likes to carry”, as it is “has to carry”, because there are probably lots of people out there are more than willing to kill him for his politics. I’d be curious to know what one must do to get a concealed carry permit in Austria,

And there is not a lot of people in government that are offering protection.

“His election would carry huge symbolism. Mr Hofer would be the first far-Right president to be elected in the European Union’s history and – both his detractors and supporters warn – that could prove a catalyst for other populist and anti-establishment movements currently surging across Europe, to grab power.”

O.M.G. like democracy, as in the people have a say in what there governments do.
    The horror.

    • It must be stopped at all costs. Hillary will lead the way.

Austria has been ruled by the same gang ( divided between two major parties) since the end of WWII

Funny how in the Telegraph article, which is identified as news and not opinion, he is described as a “far-right demagogue”. That seems to me as quite an opinionated description and I have yet to see any left-wing politician described as a far-left demagogue. Old school newspapers cannot die fast enough.
