Edmonton entrepreneur’s shocking business secret? Exploiting foreign workers

At first blush, Jennilyn Morris, 46, seems the quintessential immigrant success story.

Morris came to Canada in 1998 from the Philippines under Canada’s live-in caregiver visa program.

She married a Canadian, the father of a boy for whom she had been a nanny. Together, they had a son and a daughter. She fought and beat breast cancer. And through it all, she built two successful businesses: a restaurant, Smokey Joe’s Hickory Smoke House and Demot Cleaning, which offered housekeeping, janitorial and kitchen staff services to local hotels, including the Nisku Inn, Executive Royal Inn and Wingate House.
