I had NO idea it had come to this……

    • Alas…

      • Zaba

I comment regularly at NPR where this is the norm.
Flagging is common and many holes appear in the threads,
making it difficult to make a point, especially when facts
        are involved…..

        • It’s the personal attacks that don’t even bother to address facts or argument that we need to discourage. Telling someone to F&ck Off etc as your sole response to their comment can’t be tolerated.

          • Zaba

And those are the ones NPR frequently leaves up…..

          • john700

What happened to absolute free speech?

          • Frau Katze

It doesn’t exist in Canada. Legally, BCF is responsible for your comments. I do not think that is the case in the USA.

          • john700

What happened to the Freedominion case? After a few years, I’ve lost track of it.

          • Alain

There is also the freedom of BCF, since this is his home blog, to establish whatever rules. I do not see the conflict here in this situation. We, the visitors, also have the right to go elsewhere if we do not agree. Again that is freedom. The problem for free speech as I see it is when the state becomes involved and dictates what one can and cannot say. I exclude threats of violence of course.

        • Pavelina

What is NPR? National Public Radio?

          • canminuteman

            yes.

          • Zaba

            npr.org
            also a disqus site

          • The very pineapple of totalitarian leftist media.

      • dance…dancetotheradio

        What did I do now?

  • DaninVan

Well said! Thank you; disagreement is fair, abuse is just that.
One thing that often gets overlooked is that articles get linked to and passed on…comments and all. I always consider the comments when I do send someone a link. If they’re obnoxious the article doesn’t get sent. The tenor of the whole package reflects back on me, having sent it.

    • Zaba

      So…..free speech monitor, eh?

    • Justin St.Denis

Problem is, “abuse is just that” is unfortunately not as clear-cut as you would suggest, here or anywhere else.

      Slippery slope.

    • john700

So you don’t send any link to Muslims?

  • Spatchcocked

D’accord…..Ma femme est Bordelaise and agrees with every letter of my comment re M lePen in the previous news item I posted on.
The gentleman if I can call him that who responded bitterly and in an insulting manner to my opinion is a sal canaille who should be immersed in a boiling vat of garlic and piss until he learns that the beautiful women of France especially the intellectuals adore my conversation as much as my lovemaking.

  • Drunk_by_Noon

Okay, what did I miss this time?

    • Daviddowntown

ad hominem is intolerable and will not be tolerated.

      • Drunk_by_Noon

What did ad hominem ever do to you?

        • Daviddowntown

I were kidding but it looks like the powers that be aint.

    • Long story.

      • I hope that doesn’t mean you’re going to pull that awesome photoshop you made of Justin with Gerald’s Butt? 😉

You honestly ought to put that up again — hard on the eyes but nevertheless a satirical masterpiece!

      • Justin St.Denis

Perhaps it should be shared for the edification of those who are committed to free speech and cannot Understand why flagging and comment removal are insufficient “tools” to address this issue.

My own “issue” is how very difficult it is to define “abuse”. Being told to fuck off is hardly abusive per se, especially in a Canadian context. Perhaps this is a Toronto thing, and genuine conservatism is so NOT a Toronto thing. CONUNDRUM.

        • Yusuf_al_Kafir

          re: ‘in a Canadian context’

You can’t be a true Canadian if you’ve never said to someone ‘Fuck you, buddy!’.

It’s as Canadian as Maple Pie!

          • lolwut?

            I’m not your buddy, pal!

          • Oh yeah? Well I’m not your friend, guy!

          • Yusuf_al_Kafir

Any excuse to post this video……..

            https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zuQK6t2Esng

          • Justin St.Denis

Buddy Guy is among my favourite blues artists!

          • Justin St.Denis

That is among the points I was making. The same can be said of “Eat shit and die!” I think every Canadian who has ever had a beer in a pub or a bistro has said that or had it said to him/her.

          • Yusuf_al_Kafir

I can’t imagine having six 10″ maple syrup pies in my home.
It’s all I can do to not gorge myself on butter tarts when I pick some up at the grocery store.

          • Justin St.Denis

Oh, we gorged alright! We ate an entire pie between the two of us since yesterday. Thank God the kids are coming over for theirs this evening! I couldn’t sleep with another whole Maple Syrup Pie in the house waiting for my mouth! Neither could my wife, to be honest. We are both such OVERINDULGERS when it comes to stuff we really, really love. Crab, lobster, garlic mushrooms, English Empire pastries, scones, perogies, the list goes on and on………

          • You should try tapping a tree and boiling down 50 gallons of sap to get one gallon of syrup – and watch that temperature!

          • Justin St.Denis

No kidding. I worked a “sugar shack” back during my teen years, Grueling. But it didn’t kill my love for maple syrup! 😉

  • Norman_In_New_York

Does this mean we can follow Churchill’s lead and cite someone for uttering a terminological inexactitude?

    • Justin St.Denis

      ROFL

Don’t even suggest it. The chronically thin-skinned have a way of turning everything to their totalitarian advantage.

  • Daviddowntown

IMHO this blog has morphed into the most civil site on the interweb.

    • john700

      Boring?

      • glasnost

Maybe to some. It depends on how you derive your intellectual stimulation.

    • It usually is. With a few notable exceptions.

      • FactsWillOut

        I resemble that remark!

        • Justin St.Denis

          You are NOT boring! 😉

  • vimy

I was trying to come up with something witty to say to this but all I could think of was %$#/ >+*&^%. So I guess I’ll just keep quiet 😉

    • Justin St.Denis

Witty may soon become illegal. Again, SLIPPERY SLOPE

      • Drunk_by_Noon

Ok Justin, what did you say?

        • dance…dancetotheradio

I thought it might be me.

          • Justin St.Denis

You should watch Serge Gainsbourg’s video of a song entitled “Qui est ‘In’ et qui est ‘Out’. It’s prototypical of some of the New Wave that followed. Prophetic, you might say.

          • dance…dancetotheradio

            I will.
I’m watching Stefan Molyneux right now.
As an aside, did you ever listen to The Box, from Montreal?
Their debut album is burned in my memory.
I also had the twelve inch of l’affaire dumoutier.
My favourite New Wave album is Dazzle Ships by OMD.
It was a commercial flop but daring as hell.

          • Justin St.Denis

We have talked about The Box before – a favorite band of ours!

Love OMD, but my fave New Wave debut album was Modern English. Remember I MELT WITH YOU?

          • dance…dancetotheradio

Yes, I do, and that whole album, After The Snow, was a masterpiece.
‘Some one is calling, in the night.’

          • Justin St.Denis

            Sweet!

          • dance…dancetotheradio

            Culpable!

          • Justin St.Denis

Go to the end of this comment string. The crazy meltdown is a classic.

  • Okay kids I warned you to stop fighting — it’s punishment time. The Official portrait of Justin Trudeau with Gerald’s Butt (stolen from BCF):

I’m gonna go sit in a dark corner and question life…

      • El Martyachi

        It’s crowded.

        • Justin St.Denis

          And existentially gloomy….

          • El Martyachi

Until yer wife turns up..turning frowns upside down.

    • Justin St.Denis

A Magnificent Image. I couldn’t remember where I had seen it! That’s the best Shiny Pony satire I’ve seen in a while.

      • I could be wrong but I think Cat created it.

        • Justin St.Denis

I would shut up about that. The image cuts deep to the truth.

          • So it’s okay to hang a large nude satirical portrait of Stephen Harper in a Public Library, but not this?

            You may be right.

          • Fake nude Harper portrait on public display

          • Justin St.Denis

That is simply a bad painting. This is the first time I have actually seen it. For some reason, I had assumed it had been expertly executed (painting-wise), but this is the work of a hack.

          • And “the Emperor” is being served Tim Horton’s coffee on a plate by people in business suits.

          • dance…dancetotheradio

If I was gay I would shag him.

          • Even though that’s not Harper’s head on his real body?

          • dance…dancetotheradio

            Irrelevant, I’m not gay.

          • Well, I’m happy most of the time.

          • dance…dancetotheradio

            I’m not.
I have teenagers and I am going up North alone.

          • Very difficult if not heart-wrenching. Initially I did it for the money after graduating — for my kids future not for me. And to get away from a bad situation. Killing two birds with one stone.

In the end, I didn’t even kill one bird with many stones.

          • dance…dancetotheradio

I’m on the far side of forty so with the kids two blocks away from their high school after moving them twice in eight years,
wrenching them away from their friends
I don’t want to do that to them again.

          • I was mid-forties. And I agree moving teens is not a good thing. But at least your marriage is together and your ex didn’t tell stories to Officials about you “planning a terrorist attack”.

After I left two of the kids ended up serious drug addicts, and lots of other nasty stuff.

    • dance…dancetotheradio

I don’t know which is more offensive.
      The head or the ass.
      Know what, though?
      I’ll live.

      • You do realize that’s Kim Kardashian’s ass and not Gerald’s Butts? Sort of a triple entendre.

        • dance…dancetotheradio

          Nice.

  • lolwut?

    Ay Carumba

  • Spatchcocked

Justin can be so wantonly cruel and hurtful….I get short of breath when he makes his horrid remarks that are simply not micro cruel but are assaults on a persons very core of being…..of existing.
Then I look for a safe space….somewhere to regroup my emotions….and perhaps cry a bit.

    ITS ALL SO UNNECESSARY….

    • El Martyachi

In fairness, not all justins are stupid cunts.

      • Justin St.Denis

Indeed, Shiny Pomy is the first “stupid cunt Justin” I have ever heard of. The wife is nodding her agreement, adding “But ask the ladies why every Trish I ever met is a bitch.” 😉

  • It’s not really an infringement of free speech. Think of it as ‘politeness guidelines’. You can still say what you want, just not in the manner you want. Be creative.

And remember what the morons over at Ace’s have to tolerate!

    • Justin St.Denis

But the choice to submit to the tyranny of nice is a personal one. When the price is the truth, I choose not to submit to any tyranny. I lived too close to tyrannical regimes for too long to ever consider such a sacrifice/submission. Plus, I am too old to give a fuck anymore, quite frankly. Which is why I keep getting called back from retirement “just for this one last project”. Apparently, in a market full of intersectional bullshit for sale, accuracy and truth have acquired a new patina. 😉

      • dance…dancetotheradio

        I love the word patina.
That is why my work coffee mug remains unwashed.

  • Spatchcocked

You’ll notice I haven’t mentioned Freuds monograph on maple syrup infatuation….shocking to be sure but reasonable enough in a pathologically demented way…….
The belief in maple syrup as a brain enhancing yet autophagic diminution of “self”….of self annihilation.
Amazing stuff! Never did allow the foul deciduous excretion anywhere near my family…..

  • Spatchcocked

One last project…..it’s always just one more project….I’ve got a great brain remember……sigh.

They need me honey(to wife) they got 100,000 maple seedlings raring to be planted….in Syria!

Oh honey ain’t that where them jihaders live? Won’t that be dangerous?
Can’t you plant them in Bordeaux where your little sweety Marine lives?

That’d be too easy honey…..i gots an Arab people needs pie jus liken ours……

Gonna plant them in the Spatch valley….they say it’s the stupidest place with the stupidest people in the whole ME.

  • Spatchcocked

Give me maple syrup or give me death.

    • dance…dancetotheradio

      Give me cake or death.
      Church of England.

  • Spatchcocked

well colleagues I believe we’ve established without a doubt that maple syrup is NOT a cure for logorrhea….and has no effect on self esteem…..quite the contrary it appears from our sample here.
