German nuclear plant suffers cyber attack designed to give hackers remote access

A nuclear power plant in Germany has been found to be infected with computer viruses, but they appear not to have posed a threat to the facility’s operations because it is isolated from the Internet, the station’s operator said on Tuesday.

The Gundremmingen plant, located about 120 km (75 miles) northwest of Munich, is run by the German utility RWE.

The viruses, which include “W32.Ramnit” and “Conficker”, were discovered at Gundremmingen’s B unit in a computer system retrofitted in 2008 with data visualisation software associated with equipment for moving nuclear fuel rods, RWE said.

They will be changing the name of the plant to Gotterdammerung.

Last night I watched the movie “Blackhat” on DVD which was about hackers doing the same thing in another country. Fiction becomes non-fiction.

  • Just a matter of time before the Muslims manage to blow up a nuclear facility or a nuclear bomb of some sort in Europe. How many people will be killed? Thousands or tens of thousands or hundreds of thousands? Will the government concerned react really against the Muslim 5th column or will they just just pretend to? Will the people let it pass or react violently against the government and against the Muslims? Time will tell. We shall see history take shape.

An actual nuke in europe is highly unlikely. A dirty bomb seeded with nuclear material would be much more likely. Also I see the likely hood of nuclear waste going missing, but an actual nuclear weapon is highly unlikely unless provided whole by Iran or pakistan.

      • Yes, That’s why I said “of some sort”.
