An Austrian mayor has evicted asylum seekers from student accommodation after a refugee was arrested for reportedly raping a 13-year-old girl whom he met online.
The teenager, identified only as Ahmad S. from Afghanistan, is allegedly 16 years old, although police believe he is in his 20s. He is one of around 20 underage refugees who had been given a room in student accommodation belonging to the technical college in Hollabrunn.
After the details of the case emerged, the local mayor Erwin Bernreiter cancelled the contract with the Austrian refugee agency and all of the asylum seekers, apparently from Afghanistan, Syria and Iraq, have now been forced to move out.
The conservative (ÖVP) politician said: “I have to take into account the worries of people and react in the interests of the majority of the population. In the building where the student accommodation is based there is also a kindergarten and a small child nursery.”
