NPR Asks If It’s ‘OK to Profit’ From Cooking Food of ‘Other Cultures’…Or Is It Racist?

cultural appropriation 2

This week, NPR asked When Is It OK To Profit From Cooking Other Cultures’ Food?” In other words, is it okay for an Indian-American to run a pizza joint, or an Italian to run an Indian restaurant? If you’re a white guy cooking Mexican food, it is racist or “neocolonialist”? Apparently, to the Left, you should “stick to your own kind” when selling food.

What about the customers? To avoid unintentional cultural appropriation by eating another group’s food, shouldn’t restaurants cater only to ‘their own kind’? Should the waitstaff make that decision? “No fried chicken for white folks, no grits for Yankees.”

Is it *racist* to eat food (or patronize businesses) of other *cultures*?

    • Do or do not, either way it’s raciss.

  • Drunk_by_Noon

I cook better Mexican food than most Mexicans.
    Screw ’em all.

    • Justin St.Denis

My Shrimp Tempura is beyond fabulous. My Stuffed Vine Leaves are unparalleled. My SouthWest Salsa is fan-fucking-tastic. My Asian Spring Rolls are to die for. OMG! I am a Franco-Dutch-German-Jewish descended cultural appropriator! Somehow, though, I just feel like I’m a gifted cook. Clearly, my insensitivity indicates my clearly racist nature. Which is weird, ‘cuz I just feel fuzzy and warm with my full tummy.

Who knew racism was so delicious and comfortable? Spread the word…..

      • Drunk_by_Noon

We need to get together and trade some ethnic jokes, and maybe some recipes, but mostly ethnic jokes.

        • Justin St.Denis

          You’re on!

      • canminuteman

More roast pork and spaetzle for you! And lay off the spring rolls.

        • Justin St.Denis

My German Chocolate Torte is amazing. Be nice. I love my spaetzle!

  • That’s insane.

“As with many things involving race and class in America, there are no easy answers”

There is an easy answer. Mexican food, Chinese food, it’s all just food. It goes in at one end, gets digested, and come out the other end.

If you like it, cook it and eat it. That’s the answer.

    • Millie_Woods

Mexican food doesn’t really change on the trip from one end to the other.

      • Now, now…

        • Millie_Woods

Sorry, I had a bad Mexican food experience once and I’ll never forgive them.

          • I understand.

One bad meal or drink and the love affair is over.

          • Justin St.Denis

OMG! Did you date Phyllis, too? Glad to know I’m not the only survivor…

          • Was Phyllis trying to give everyone food poisoning?

          • Justin St.Denis

As far as I can tell! What did she try to serve you on your date with her? I’ve never gone near butternut squash soup since mine! 😉

          • My brother makes excellent curried squash soup.

          • k1962

I had a bad experience with chicken teriyaki and won’t eat it again, but maybe the problem was because it wasn’t cooked by Japanese people 😉

          • Justin St.Denis

Teriyaki prepared by Poles, I understand, has toxic effects on Serbs, Finns, Greenlanders and, for some reason, residents of Boise, Idaho. Be warned. Pass it on…

          • k1962

Okay, will do (that was too funny btw)!

But I had this dish about 20 years ago at the Makena golf course restaurant in Maui. Who knows who cooked my food at that privileged establishment, maybe it was a Polynesian?

        • Now, now, and then, then: that’s what she’s saying.

      • Justin St.Denis

A keen observation. Clearly, you are “texture-sensitive”. 😉

      • Kell

not so sure Chinese does, either!

    • canminuteman

“As with many things involving race and class in America, there are no easy answers”

When it comes to this situation, there aren’t even any questions.

  • But foreign food is good.

    And think of the economy.

    • Drunk_by_Noon

The stuff that’s been cleaned up can be, but the recipes that get left behind in the old country were usually left behind for a very good reason.
Tacos make from deep fried meal worms or spit roasted iguana usually are not big sellers up here.
Actually I’d eat the mealworm tacos again before I’d go anywhere near iguana.
      Never try the iguana.

      • I won’t!

Cambodians eat fried spiders but they also have delicious curry.

        Different strokes, as they say.

  • TJ

Any resemblance to food you get in China is purely coincidental when you pick up some Chinese take out. Are pineapples native to China for the pineapple chicken that was cultural appropriated for a western Chinese food menu.

    • Frances

Actually, there are some “Chinese” dishes that were supposedly invented in North America by early Chinese immigrants who opened restaurants and adapted their traditional recipes to suit the tastes of the locals. Chop suey is one, though it is probably an adaptation from a peasant dish in China.

      • TJ

That is what I mean. How can something that has been changed to suit local tastes be cultural appropriation. If one eats Pizza in Italy it will not be the same as Domino’s. Yet the culture of Italy has been stolen every time there is a kids pizza party or something.

        • luna

Domino’s pizza is racist & offensive.

      • canminuteman

This is a good thing. I have seen what they eat in China and I don’t want any part of it.

    • k1962

You can get pineapple from Thailand or the Philippines, so maybe they grow them in China too. You know, they’re kind of close geographically.

….Hmmmm, was what I just said okay or was it racist? You have to be so careful nowadays.

      • luna

        Micro-aggression.

By the way, facts & logical conclusions are racist.

  • useless opinion

As a full on English whitebread, I can cook French and Mexican as well as and better than some of those folks. Ever notice how most of us from the real world don’t care much about this. The best pizza joint in Toronto was run by a Greek family, the best American burger joint was run by a Greek family. Oh, they be just white as the honkies? You poor Mediterranean’s being lumped in with the white imperialist dogs of the dead British Empire. We are told we are gone, yet still seem to rule. Oh that is right, we are not stoop sitting waiting for our next guvmint cheque. Notice the proper british spelling. Does anyone notice that the only folks who want to go back to 1300AD are Indians, muslim terrorists and their lackies, feminists and progressives?

    • k1962

Greeks do make the best pizza, don’t they?

  • Norman_In_New_York

I would laugh at this except that NPR is funded by my tax dollars against my will. The loony left demands as much jizya as any Muslim entity.

  • Dana Garcia

By that reasoning, immigrants are the biggest appropriators of all, since they come and grab whatever they can get their hands on.

They should go home and marinate in their beloved oh-so-special cultures forever then.

    • luna

By this same *logic*, it is racist to wish immigrants integrate into society.

      • Drunk_by_Noon

        That’s a first-order sin of multi-cult.

  • Frances

Go to the food court of the local mall and EVERY booth is manned by Chinese/Vietnamese workers, no matter what the cuisine.

    • luna

Usually I see “Mexicans” (people from central & south America) working in restaurants.

      • Drunk_by_Noon

Depends on where you are at.

    • They do work hard … at giving everyone cholesterol.

  • Hard Little Machine

What is the indigenous cuisine of WASP upper middle class alcoholic NPR culture?

  • marty_p

I plan on picketing Tim Hortons – they appropriated bagels from the Jews.

    • Minicapt

… but the doughnuts are Canadian …

      Cheers

  • canminuteman

doublethink – the ability to hold two contradictory opinions at the same time and believe them both to be true.

The left believes that we should all stick with our own kind. The left doesn’t believe countries should have borders and that diversity is the greatest think ever!!

I don’t know how they don’t become so confused that they blow their own brains out.

    • k1962

      Good observation.

    • Justin St.Denis

The rate of depression an the Left is significantly higher than among conservatives, likely proving that hysterical rage eats the mind over time.

      • Kell

…or it could just be the siphyllis! (?)

  • BigBlue

I knew there was a reason besides spitting out the seeds that I didn’t like watermelon: cultural appropriation!
