An Assessment of the terrorist threat in Brussels and Paris

Brussels-Terrorism-Police 800x500_c

Since the deadly attacks of November 13th in Paris, the terrorist threat in the French capital has been closely associated with the security environment in Brussels. Radical Islamist networks with ties to the Islamic State and benefiting from deep-rooted support bases in Belgium have been at the origin of the November attacks as well as several other thwarted plots.

Both countries continue to face a heightened terrorist threat and police forces as well as intelligence agencies are cooperating to prevent further attacks and collect information concerning groups that actively support Middle East-based Sunni extremist militants.

Calls into question whether the metro was the target, or a suicide bomber in transit suffered premature detonation.

BBC already spewing an exculpatory rationale, talking about failure of multi-culturalism, “severe challenges” to communities, ghettoization and radicalization. Mustn’t blame their religion.
They haven’t yet started speculating about backlash. It’ll come (the speculation I mean).

Security at airport is near centre of airport, designed to protect planes, with no screening at the entrances to the terminal buildings.

Latest: Airport attack was Suicide bomber.

  • I arrived yesterday in Paris. At the Charles de Gaulle Airport there were quite a few heavily armed soldiers. The same was the situation at the Montparnasse railway station (had to take a train to Bordeaux from there). Now the explosions in Brussels are covered on every TV channel, there is fear that France could be hit again. Interestingly, while walking in Paris yesterday we saw fewer Muslims in nightgowns and hijabs than we can usually see in Toronto. In Bordeaux you can hardly see any Muslims in the downtown area. I was told that most of them live in compact quarters which are isolated and most French people are not aware of the danger. Let’s see what will happen in the next few days.

If it wasn’t for today’s events, this would have been a great story about French and Belgian cooperation on security issues.
