Islamic State gets closer to acquiring radioactive “dirty” bomb

According to recent news reports, the Islamic State (Isis) in Iraq and Syria seems to have intensified its efforts to build a “dirty” bomb. The reports coming from Iraq indicate that the terrorist group might already be in the possession of required radioactive material. The material was reportedly stolen from an oil facility in southern Iraq and was part a monitoring system used to detect structural flaws in oil and gas pipelines.

There will be smiles in the PMO and CBC offices, and the toasting of wine glasses in high places, when Islamist war criminals explode a dirty bomb in a Canadian city.

Computer Radiography Inspection equipment using Alpha/Gamma emitters have a very small amount of isotopic material as their radiation source. Usually a capsule containing a tiny pellet of an Iridium or Cobalt isotope perhaps 2-4 millimetres in size. Even if the spare capsules were stolen as well, there would be very little material involved. For an effective “dirty bomb” a larger quantity say (20 – 50 grams) of Plutonium would be much better, if you could get it, because of its extreme toxicity and very long half life.

This story smells like ISIS fear propaganda.
