Gee, no one saw this coming… Cable TV “starter packages” total crap

Bell’s entry-level package, posted online without fanfare two days before deadline, costs $24.95 per month. It counts the Weather Network, TVO and 10 francophone channels among its 26 offerings, according to the Bell website.

This will encourage more cable cutting I suspect.

Cable companies continue to be run by stupid people and they don’t care who knows it. Then again, when you have built a 1000 channel universe that has almost zero quality product on offer, and zero value in the buy sell game, no worries that some hotshot will try to grab your job.
The screwing of Sun News did it for me.

    • It really is a rotten system. An oligarchy operated by government license.

What makes it truly dumb is that — given that cable companies can steal commercial time from American networks — they run mindlessly repetitive commercials pushing their products, to the point where watching anything becomes unbearable.

Great improvement. All your left with is dozens of french stations, CBC, and the whiny indian channel.

Plus the shopping channel and the local yokel cable channel.

    Where’s The Butterfly Network?

    • BANNED!

I hear they will be having the burning log channel on the basic package.

They’ve been flogging this on Newstalk 1010 (owned by Bell Media) during the news broadcasts (!) this morning.

When we heard “26 channels, 10 OF THEM FRANCOPHONE,” hubby and I burst out laughing. Who the hell wants 10 French channels? Why pay a dime for 16 English stations?

Our 20+ year old antenna provides WAY more choice, including US channels–and only one crap French station. Add Netflix to the mix, and there’s no need for cable tv at all. Bwa ha ha ha. I hope they lose all their customers.

    • They will.

There’s tons of channels nobody wants that are forced down our throats – TV Ontario French, APTN to name just two.
Years ago I tried to file a complaint that Rogers analogue cable in York Region was forcing all subscribers with packages to pay for BET + Telelatino and Fairchild – all 3 ethnic channels with a limited focus. Rogers head office told me to take a hike.

    What are cable and TV?

Citified words for talkin’ picher box.

  • Shaw’s basic service includes American channels (including PBS) and some high definition channels. I’ m delighted as my bill is going from $44 to $25.

    • That is good news. All I have to do is figure out how to get internet without internet.

I always thought that basic internet would become free with advertising, like OTA television. Google is experimenting with blimp based transmitters that broadcast free internet to large regions in Africa.

I worked for Ma Bell in the 70’s. How in H could a stuffy stiff-dick company like Bell get into something like Media…maybe I should have stayed….

    • They are cutting news big time and I have yet to notice any “quality” programming.

CFRB is owned by Bell, and is supposedly the biggest station in Canada yet a huge chunk of the weekend’s programming is repeats you can tune into the same week old show 3 or 4 times it seems.

…the absolutely STRAIGHTEST student at Rye High applied for a job at ‘RB…naturally, he got a haircut before the interview, happily, they told Ian FINE…you’re hired. Just get a proper haircut…what a bunch of stiff fucks…the rest of us, many went to work for Moses Z…..

Bell tried to get American networks kicked off the air waves.

In Québec Videotron is mum on the subject.

And how I miss those top loading VCRs from the late 70s

The only channels I am interested in are AMC and TCM.

I have saved thousands by keeping my tv on the Aquarium channel. Salt water tanks, tropical fish, coral… it all adds up!
