Why we should have cameras in courtroom

Thanks to the frequent tweets of the hardworking court reporters who covered the Jian Ghomeshi trial, the public received incredible coverage of events, almost in real time.

It was almost as if we were in the courtroom, alongside the reporters.

In addition, the many courtroom sketches published by various media outlets almost placed us inside the courtroom.

So long as the accused is allowed to be named publicly, cameras should certainly be allowed in the courtroom. My problem with arguing this issue is it might distract from the bigger issue that seems to have happened in the last 20-25 years, publication bans. It’s a great idea to be able to air the proceedings when they happen, but it seems far to many cases can’t even get the details printed. I have not seen any study of the numbers, so I could be wrong, but it certainly seems we have far more publication bans than we used to. I remember when the Bernardo trial had the ban, it was considered an unusual step and the media fought against it. Now it seems to be the default position.

It might delay proceedings for jurors to take a selfie with the accused.
