Republicans face facts over Trump nomination

America’s Republican establishment is on the brink of conceding defeat over its bitter battle to prevent Donald Trump becoming the party’s presidential nominee.

With Mr Trump’s main rival, Marco Rubio, facing the prospect of being left dead in the water after this week’s crucial “Super Tuesday” contest, some senior Republicans have said the party must accept the prospect of a Trump candidacy.

The new mood of realism followed an important endorsement for Mr Trump on Friday night from Chris Christie, the New Jersey governor and former presidential candidate, who was himself once a favoured candidate of the Republican establishment.
