Austrian migrant cap comes into force: Defiant government implements new limit of 80 refugees A DAY despite warnings from Brussels

Austria has introduced a controversial daily cap on asylum-seekers entering the country in a move that the European Commission has described as ‘plainly incompatible’ with EU and international laws.

In the latest in a series of unilateral measures by nations, Vienna says as of Friday 8am local time (7am GMT) it will allow no more than 80 migrants a day to claim asylum at its borders while letting in no more than 3,200 people looking for asylum elsewhere to transit.

Police spokesman Fritz Grundnig said that once the quotas have been reached, ‘the borders will be closed.

80 a day is 29,000 per year. Eight a day is still too many.

Why not just close the borders period? Austria has already been sufficiently enriched.
