Half of Calais ‘Jungle’ migrant camp to be cleared ‘within a week’

Half of Calais’ “Jungle” migrant camp is to be “evacuated” within a week, with up to 1,000 people moved out of makeshift tents into semi-permanent accommodation in the camp or further afield, French authorities announced on Friday.

French police last month already cleared a 100m section of the camp that is home to up to 5,000 migrants, who use it as a base while they attempt to cross the reach the UK. The move from a stretch near a motorway went relatively smoothly after initial protests in which two bulldozers were set on fire.
