A Lesson to Republicans in Canada’s Conservative Party Defeat

The failure of Canada’s majority Conservative government to win re-election on October 17, 2015 should serve as an object lesson to the Republican establishment in the United States. Among a number of reasons for the debacle, the abandonment or weakening of first principles in the name of pragmatic and ideological compromise was a major factor leading to the Conservative defeat.

But we need to “make the tent bigger” and reach across the aisle!

They reached so far in Alberta that they figured the NDP couldn’t be any worse.

The big difference here is the constitutional separation of powers in the U.S. Congress is generally viewed as the weak sister of the three branches of government. A forceful Republican candidate, preferably outside the entrenched establishment, can “triangulate” between the partisan blocs in Congress to push his agenda through, especially if he can effectively use the bully pulpit. This is a secret of Trump’s high standing in the polls.

I agree, Harper should have used his majority to destroy liberalism, gun control, human rights legislation and sold the CBC.

I get the impression that the tories did not make much of an effort to win. The price of oil will be down for the foreseeable future, real estate is collapsing everywhere but in Vancouver and Toronto. They want the liberals to own the coming economic collapse.

While I agree with the premise that the Harper Tories could have hewed more closely to conservative principles, I don’t think that the failure to do so is what did ’em in. I think you can blame that on a combination of factors including fatigue with a government that had held power for nearly a decade; the media’s relentless Harper Derangement Syndrome and infatuation with Boy Trudeau; and the fact that Canada has a center-left political orientation (as opposed to the US, which has a center-right one).

There are VERY FEW conservatives in the US Republican party, they are mostly politicians only interested in their own power. It it requires whoring themselves out to the left to keep the power they have no issue there at all.
