100 Percent Is Overrated

At whatever age smart people develop the idea that they are smart, they also tend to develop vulnerability around relinquishing that label. So the difference between telling a kid “You did a great job” and “You are smart” isn’t subtle. That is, at least, according to one growing movement in education and parenting that advocates for retirement of “the S word.”

Based on personal observation over a long enough lifetime I find that those who consider themselves smart aren’t.

Not always correct. Back when one had to write “provincial exams” to get out of high school, I found myself at 13 writing the final provincial algebra, geometry and trigonometry exams. I knocked off physics and chemistry the following year. My last years of high school were spent running track-and-field events, knocking off language courses and chasing girls.

When you’ve got a radio face like mine you have to take solace in being smart.
Back in high school we could take honours courses in English and Math.
Basically it was taking two years to finish three years worth of work.
I only had to take four more credits in Grade 12 to graduate.
Just as well because I was working thirty hours a week washing dishes.

… this will make them really smart
Portland Community College to devote an entire month to ‘whiteness’-shaming

.. sheesh.. and guess where they got the idea from..Calgary!
    Understanding Whiteness
“To understand the history of the ideology of ‘race,’ and combating
racism today, involves understanding (and challenging) ‘whiteness’ as
the foundation of racial categories and racism.”

typical marxist style brainwashing. Given the dismal raw material at hand there is very little challenge involved.

American education is based on bringing the lowest quintile up to the level of the 4th. Anyone on the right side of the Bell Curve is abandoned to thrive on their own. America wants a nation of failures and idiots who feel really proud about that.

      Same in Canada.

Liberals are obsessed with controlling the use and meaning of words.

    • Alain

That is because they have discovered that words matter when it comes to social engineering.

Sure, I’ll retire the “S” word you don’t like, but can I get the word “stupid” back. I can use that one a lot more often.
