Vatican criticises farcical Italian New Year’s Eve show

Italy’s national broadcaster has been criticised by the Vatican after staging a farcical New Year’s Eve show in which it broadcast swear words and blasphemous insults, got the countdown to midnight wrong and revealed the death of a key protagonist in the latest Star Wars film.

During the New Year’s Eve spectacular on a flagship channel of RAI, viewers sent in messages of goodwill to friends and family, which then appeared along the bottom of the television screen.
But some of the missives were less than festive, with one containing the phrase “porco Dio” – literally, “God (is a) pig”, considered to be one of the gravest insults in Italian.
