That was some sturdy flashlight…

Town of Tonawanda Police say the incident occurred just before 11 p.m. on Tuesday when Robert M. Samson, 59, entered the store, displayed a handgun and demanded cash from the clerk.

As this was happening, a citizen with a large flashlight struck Samson several times in the head, dismantling and knocking him to the floor. The citizen acted within the law, according to police.

That was no mere flashlight, that was a MagLite.
Yeah, you can brain somebody good with one of those things.
I’d rather get hit with an officer’s baton than his MagLite.

I had one that took about 5 “D” batteries with splines down the handle that can really split the skin open .
The OPP up North on the Highways at Night would use one of those, I made sure I wasn’t a really annoying prick bitching about my Rights when the OPP officer stopped to see why my car was on the shoulder of the highway.
They actually gave it to me to hold so they could glance at the engine to see how bad the water pump problem was .
Forget the billy club, this was heavy and gave they a foot and half extension to their arm if they swing it at you. That guy on the floor is what should have happened to Michael Brown when he assaulted a immigrant store clerk and robbed it of cigars.
Brown would still be alive to be hauled in to a Court Room with the store Video to nail him no matter what Sharpton and BLM say.

Northern Ontario cops say “I showed him the light’. Common saying.

    “dismantling him”?
    An advanced form of disarming??
Seemed to have everything attached as he staggered out …
    (Sorry! Couldn’t resist it!)

When you can’t carry a gun, a heavy, high lumen tactical flashlight is a good option – and they aren’t illegal anywhere yet.

    • Clink9

I’ve seen “tactical” flashlights for blinding people.

      • Xavier

If you can get one with at least 600-800 lumens, you can blind an attacker to the point that you have at least 5 seconds while they’re ‘dazzled’ to either flee or fight. Many come with a spiked/sharpened front end.

  • Way to go. Good citizen.

        I love instant justice.

In Canada the hero would be in jail and the robber would be getting free health care right now.

    Assault and battery.

    • Blacksmith

Well without the batteries you lose 90% of the weight so you need them………

Tonawanda. That’s a blast from the past. I haven’t heard that place name in a long time. When I was a kid and we watched TV from Buffalo if there always seemed to be a fire in Tonawanda, Cheektawaga or Lakawanna. With all the fires they had I imagine that those places look like Detroit by now.

Worked out OK, but very risky. If the guy shoots the clerk, probably in bad trouble.
    Why let the perp go?
