Muslims open fire on tourists in Russia’s Dagestan

One person was killed and eleven injured late on Wednesday in Russia’s predominantly Muslim republic of Dagestan after an unknown gunmen opened fire on a group of tourists visiting a UNESCO world heritage site in Derbent.

The ancient city of Derbent is a hotspot for tourists and the fortress is a UNESCO world heritage site, but the region has long been plagued by shootouts between police and members of the republic’s underground Islamist insurgency.
