The Case Against Colorblind Casting

Its been praised as a way to make Hollywood more diverse. But when does acceptance become erasure?

Gods of Egypt, a fantasy-action epic, came under fire recently for casting white actors including Gerard Butler and Nikolaj Coster-Waldau to play ancient Egyptians. While the director Alex Proyas and the production company Lionsgate have apologized, their words fall somewhat flat coming just two years after Ridley Scott’s Exodus faced similar criticism. In an interview with GQ, one of the film’s actors, Chadwick Boseman, tried to respectfully defend Gods of Egypt, but ended up noting a depressing truth about Hollywood: “People don’t make $140 million movies starring black and brown people.”

Egyptians are “brown people”? Cafe-au-lait at most.

Coptic Egyptians, who are less admixed with Arabs and sub-Saharan blacks than Moslem Egyptians, and are considered by Egyptologists to be mainly descended from the Egyptians of pharaonic times, are often quite fair skinned, and not uncommonly exhibit traits of blondism. (One of the loveliest young women I ever saw was a green-eyed Coptic beauty who attended the University of Florida in the 1970s.) This accords well with the fact that the surviving mummies of the ancient Egyptian elite and the many polychromed figurines found in their tombs are definitely Caucasoid in appearance. Heck, Ramses II, whose mummified head has survived and is on exhibit at the Cairo Museum, was quite definitely a redhead. (I actually got to see it, in Jacksonville, Florida, when the Cairo Museum sent it to the U. S., in 1986, as part of a touring exhibit of 19th Dynasty artifacts.)

If some guy decided to risk his savings to open a hot dog stand would people feel they had the right to insist he sell hamburgers?

A lot of leftists would feel they had the right to insist he serve “healthier-low-carbon-footprint-sustainable-free-range-cruelty-free-low-fat-equitable tofu burgers! They hold the moral high ground, it’s for the children. Don’t you want to save the earth for the children?

I might start to think we should be colour blind with movies the day black people line up to see all white movies the way they do for the latest movie starring a rapper, or a Spike Lee movie, or whatever else is the latest “black culture” experience.
Just like everything else, diversity always seems to only “need” to go one way.

I have no interest in seeing a movie in spanish or french as I don’t speak either language. That being said why would I go see a movie staring black actors that speak ebonics? If i don’t understand the slang the movie will be a no go for me.

    • Justin St.Denis

I hear you on the Eboncs thing, and I do speak French and a little Spanish even.

Our society has become a cesspool full of outraged assholes who have taken it upon themselves to impose their will, attitude, morals and thoughts on the rest of us. As far as I’m concerned when people stop telling me what I can or can’t think, see or do, then I’ll entertain their pernicious grievances. But, until that happens they’re nothing but a aggravation with no redeeming value what so ever who, should be ignored by the rational section of society.

“Outrage” is the new black, if you follow what I mean and pun intended.

  • eMan14

It’s bad enough that accountants pick and choose which movies we see. Why else did we end up with Rocky 7 and Scream 4, etc. Now they want politically correct casting… Really? They want casting to promote diversity? God forbid we don’t have our black character, our gay character, our Latino character, our kick ass woman character… and so on.
Having said that casting can make a movie. It can destroy a movie. It should make sense. It can be brilliant. But it should never be because… “oh, we need a black character here, or a gay character there” Unless of course it’s about a black family that may have a gay son.
