TV ad revenues in “free fall”

From Hollywood Reporter:

In the U.S., digital advertising will surpass TV in 2016.

For the first time in history, outside of recession years, global television advertising revenue fell year-over-year as digital advertising surged once again. Digital, in fact, should overtake TV by the end of 2017, according to a study released Monday from Magna Global.

A different study from ZenithOptimedia, also released Monday, says TV’s share of the advertising pie probably peaked at 39.7 percent in 2012, and it will be overtaken by digital for the first time in 2018.

Both studies paint a rosy picture for digital advertising and a troubling one for traditional cable and broadcast TV, at least in the long term. More.

Reality check: People share the media behemoths’ values but aren’t watching or listening anyway now. Most voters/taxpayers won’t notice if governments quietly subsume them into PR operations, operations that the media will be more or less compelled to go along with.

Consequences: 1) The only authentic media will be independent new media 2) We must each develop our own news sources that we have some reason to trust 3) The bailed-out legacy media will be hostile to free flow of information, by virtue of their own new position, and many battles will be fought around free flow. 4) Traditional cultures can only survive wth free flow.

I spend weekends as a weekend home w/ no cable. Just whatever comes in over the air. By that measure TV is about 75% ads each of which is a single block ad for some stupid as seen on TV product or Medicare Part B insurance.

    • I would cut the cord in a minute if i could but Mom likes her “shows” etc.

      • Hard Little Machine

The only thing I keep cable for at my primary home is for cable news.

    • Good to know there’s another fellow OTA (over-the-air) head out there. Especially Canadian cable — terrible content, and zero political free speech. And the MSM here is ten times more greedy than in the U.S. — at least some of the U.S. big media offers some content for free over the internet. Not in Canada — hard to find any free content, even though it’s subsidized. I don’t expect all content for free — somebody has to pay the bills — but I’m certainly not going to pay for political indoctrination, which is what Canadian media is all about. I would in fact pay for Rebel when some of its content goes to pay.

We cut the cord way back when negative billing was introduced. At the time, we figured we had better things on which to spend the $40/month! Don’t miss it at all, especially with the arrival of Netflix.

I would also pay for Rebel–truly original and valuable content!

I always encourage family and friends to do the math and determine if their fave shows are worth the outrageous sums they are paying. Most people are really only interested in 1 or 2 cable channels, plus what you could get via antenna for free. It’s simply not worth it.

CBC must be hurting.. they keep jamming ads on CNN. which nobody watches

    • Ron MacDonald

They should advertise on Fox News Channel.

        that would alter their DNA

        • Ron MacDonald

It would certainly be a blow to their pompous ego.

They also advertise on radio stations, here in Vancouver, BC – they sound desperate.

      • Frances

They’re also running odd ads on the radio stations now.

Meanwhile the CBC has been promised millions more by the Liberals.

“Traditional cultures can only survive wth free flow.” Societies which lack such a free flow of information, opinions and ideas will stagnate, and cease to innovate. That is one reason freedom of speech is so crucial. Start silencing voices and forcing conformity, and this spreads and contaminates all aspects of society: the arts, business, culture, science – everything. We are already witnessing this decline in all Western nations, to varying extents.

Oh my God. CBC “The National” tonight reports that islamophobia is running wild across Canada. According to their report, a muslim referee at a girl’s hockey game was called a camel jockey by a parent. All the parents were kicked out as a result and an investigation is being conducted. Will these atrocities against the religion of peace not stop here. Its a good thing we have the CBC to report these things.

    • LauraS

      Classic CBC!

Unless the “hate speech” is verified by a non-Muslim at the hockey game, I don’t believe it happened.

      Sticks and stones.

Something we all learned in kindergarten but these big sucks didn’t.

when there is nothing on that interests my wife or I, when the news is manufactured and filtered to their views and when I am insulted for my Christianity on “talk” shows, why should I watch tv?
