Britain’s anti-nukes movement was long reputed to be bankrolled by the Kremlin…but was it?

The ‘funded by Moscow’ accusation is one that has been lobbed around at lefty campaigners for decades — the old saw was that CND stood for ‘Communist, Neutralist, Defeatist’. It’s all too credible — any number of British organisations on the left have now been proven to have taken ‘Moscow Gold’.

The West should have rolled over for the communists.
Life would be so much better now.

If they weren’t, they were the only such organisation.

    Cheers

The opening of the archives in Moscow pretty well confirmed that the Reds backed the whole unilateral peace movement for years.

Greenpeace and other anti-North American oil groups take in major donations from the Saudis.

More things change, more they stay the same.

…..I referred to the letter from Dr Julian Lewis (now an MP) and others to the Sunday Times of 26 March 1995 (available here) headed ‘CND Cannot Rewrite History’. Of particular relevance, I think, is the final paragraph:

‘As for Soviet funding of CND, it was proven in November 1991 that the KGB bankrolled the British Communist Party throughout the 1970s – the very period when (as Bruce Kent repeatedly acknowledged) only the support of the Communist Party and of the Quakers enabled CND to survive.’

CND demanding the recall of the Falklands task force.

Bruce Kent is on the left. Partially hidden at the back, centre is CND national treasurer Cathy Ashton, now Baroness Ashton, EU “Foreign Minister” (High Representative for Foreign Affairs) 2009-2014

I cited information about the group’s past, in particular its past sources of funding. In doing so I referred to the letter from Dr Julian Lewis (now an MP) and others to the Sunday Times of 26 March 1995 (availablehere)
