David Cameron announces 5,000-strong ‘strike brigades’ to take the fight to terrorists

Britain’s army is to be restructured to form two “strike brigades” of 5,000 soldiers which can be deployed immediately to fight terrorists and others threatening the country, the Prime Minister has announced.

In an article for The Telegraph, David Cameron sets out how he will spend £178 billion on military equipment over the next decade as Britain rushes to tackle the threat posed by Isil.

The Prime Minister will on Monday travel to Paris for talks with Francois Hollande, the French President, before returning to Parliament to set out details to overhaul Britain’s armed forces.

Canada should seriously consider adding a battle group to one of these strike brigades. We need to keep the hard-learned lessons of Afghanistan and keep current on tactics and war-fighting doctrine (yes, this stuff changes constantly).

Will their first deployment be to Rotherham?

This is the guy who scrapped Britain’s maritime patrol aircraft, so that when Russian submarines were lurking off the British coast, he had to turn to Canada and Portugal for assistance.

The UK armed forces is on track to have fewer than 50,000 troops in a decade. That’s less than a third of their current size. They are building down very rapidly. Which is why Cameron’s announcement he’s buying all these F-35’s is complete nonsense. We should expect to see the next non Conservative government abandon nuclear weapons. They just don’t want to pay for them.
