Next Conservative leader needs Mulroney’s charm

In politics, charm matters. And former prime minister Brian Mulroney’s got plenty of it, as he proved in Toronto Thursday night when he spoke to a large crowd of prominent conservatives on how to re-energize the movement.

However, what was most instructive about his much-hyped appearance at the Albany Club’s dinner wasn’t what he said, but how he said it.

Does this mean the Conservatives need to fight “fire with fire” when it comes to defeating Justin Trudeau by having Ben Mulroney as their leader! https://nationalpostcom.files.wordpress.com/2013/09/trumul.jpg?w=620

Nothing against Ben Mulroney but after Trudeau I don’t think people will make that mistake again.
But then, I’m an optimistic pessimist.

Your more optimistic then I am.

  • David Murrell

Dud Mulroney bring with him, where he was speaking, a shoebox full of cash?

    • Alain

Yes, he ended up trying to act like the Liberals had been doing for years, but not having had as much practice he did not have it all refined like the Liberals. That would be the only difference. I am not excusing government theft and corruption only pointing out the truth. At the time I lived in Quebec and like the majority of people there voted for him and his party, which had much to do with them winning big. I and most others voted for him and his party, because we were fed up with the Liberals’ theft and corruption. Later down the road when we found that our trust had been betrayed there was much bitterness and anger. Still he did do some good things compared to the Liberals, so with time I do not feel as much resentment towards him. Whatever he never came anywhere near the level of Cretien but was smeared and attacked relentlessly while ole Jean go away with the bank.

The master of bribery ,lias corrupt deals ,he wants to be an advisor what a joke .

      • Maurixio Garciasanchez

Harper rejected his advice , he didn’t have no choice but gave his support to the Libs .

        • DMB

Brian see’s Steven Harper as part of the old Reform party crowd and never accepted him or the new Conservative party.

          • Maurixio Garciasanchez

The Cons need to rebuild the party with new faces , new ideas and a new leadership who can deal with all kinds of people in the positive way .

          • El Martyachi

We gotta somehow get you Bannon and Smashi campaigning for 2020.

          • Maurixio Garciasanchez

            0) I’m not ready .

          • El Martyachi

With that attitude you never will be either, candidate! The 2020 “Clean” Sanchez campaign awaits!

          • Maurixio Garciasanchez

My point of view is , remember when the reform party was founded I figure out that race was problem for them at that particular time The Cons under Brian were going in the wrong direction whit their GST and their bribes.

          • Clausewitz

Hmmmmm, let’s see what the GST replaced; the 11% manufacturer’s tax, the 11% telecommunications tax, the 18% cross border transference tax, the 10% education provisional tax, and at the time the PET oil tax of 15%. The only problem with the GST is that as usual the MSM lied about what was going on.

          • Maurixio Garciasanchez

It affected the consumers , that means everything got expensive with that tax .

          • Clausewitz

Riiight, Paying a 7% tax instead of an a 11% and higher tax makes everything more expensive.

          • Maurixio Garciasanchez

Not Alberta , the consumers before they didn’t have sales tax .

          • Clausewitz

Everyone paid the previously quoted “Federal” taxes. The GST had nothing to do with the PST. Consumers paid federal taxes in Alberta, it was that they were hidden under the Liberal regimes.

          • Maurixio Garciasanchez

Now let’s hope the middle class returns back , under the Cons leadership the middle class was put up into an extinction , the corporate sector was taking control of almost everything paying low taxes or few of them paying no taxes at all .

          • Clausewitz

You really are a Liberal Parrot.

          • Maurixio Garciasanchez

Ups sorry I forgot that you are part of the Mike Duffy team .

  • Millie_Woods

Mulroney took the PC’s from 2 solid majority governments to 2 seats in parliament. There was a good reason that happened. I actually consider the damage he did to Canada to be as bad as that of Trudeau the elder. I hope I live long enough to read his obituary……over and over again.

    • Alain

Well he was above all a Quebecer. You know one of those Justin estimes to be the only capable ones of ruling Canada.

O villain, villain, smiling, damnèd villain!

  • andycanuck

You know, the guy the Left called “Hitler” back then.

  • Scaramouche

Lest we forget, the leftist elites despised “charming” Mulroney every bit as much–and maybe even more–than they despised the purported charmless Harper. These men are loathed BECAUSE they helm Canada’s “right-wing” party (or what passes for right-wing here in Canada). “Charm”–it’s presence or distinct lack thereof–has nothing to do with the demonization that the elites believe each and every Conservative leader is due.

    • Alain

      Bingo.

  • Clausewitz

    Sorry, less style, more substance.
