Venezuelans leave 21st-century socialism for US, Spain

Venezuela’s 21st-century socialism is pushing ever more people into exile. The exodus has reached record levels.

According to a survey by the Andres Bello Catholic University in Caracas, 1.2-1.5 million Venezuelans now live outside the country. Ninety percent of that emigration has taken place in the past 15 years.

“Venezuela has gone from being a country of immigration to being one of emigration,” said Tomas Paez, a sociologist at the University of Caracas. “President Nicolas Maduro’s administration has done nothing to curb the exodus – quite the opposite: They are encouraging it.”

Encouraging (presumably productive) people to flee your socialist hellhole? You’re doing it wrong.

    • Alain

Maduro is even screwing up communism. There was a reason why communist countries built fences and walls to keep people from leaving. It was not needed to keep people out.

but… but it was an anti fascism fence , and besides according to the old communist wankers that infest my little town, despite millions dead they still lust for it to rise again as”it just hasn’t been done right yet” yes… they teach .I have never met a productive communist yet they all seem to work at puff jobs that create nothing.

        • Maggat

          Gov’t jobs!

        • Alain

Well there is no cure for stupid, and some people never learn. I truly have no patience or tolerance for such people, especially when they want to impose their stupidity on everyone else.

    • Maggat

Of course they are doing it wrong, they are socialists, what would you expect?

      • Alain

I maintain that socialists are really just communists.

        • V10_Rob

          Distinctions without a difference.

        • Maggat

Same spots a a leopard, must be a leopard.

  • tom_billesley

Another country that’ll be living off remittences from exiles. Sad.

  • Dana Garcia

Spain is very nice I hear. Go there.

    • tom_billesley

Native born Latin Americans can get Spanish citizenship after only two years residence, much quicker than in other EU states.

    • ntt1

its on the ropes economically ,their sad state is not spotlighted because the greeks are worse off . Both Italy and spain are right on the line and in danger of collapsing totally.

      • Dana Garcia

So Venezuelans will feel at home in Spain.

        • Alain

Well, compared to the government they fled, they actually do have a bit more freedom.

We had an expat venezuelan as an NDP candidate two elections ago, she did not run again in the recent one due to her complete loss of faith in her religion.;state control.

    • andycanuck

And she discovered toilet paper here was available and better quality than back home while still being cheap.

      • ntt1

she still sends “care packages” to her family mostly female paper goods

  • Maggat

I’ve been there and would consider that refugees or just plain immigrants from Venezuela would be far better than the dross Shiney Pony is touting from the ME

    • Alain

      Totally agree.

    • Norman_In_New_York

They are even better baseball players.

  • Hard Little Machine

And then they overstay their visas here, and become illegal.
