More Americans on welfare than work full time?

Yes, says Census Bureau:

A new report from the Census Bureau showed a total of 108,592,000 people were on some sort of means-tested government benefits program in the fourth quarter of 2011, yet only 101,716,000 people were employed full-time for the entire year.

That is the fundamental political issue, and the one that we ignore at our peril: Vast and growing numbers of citizens today simply want/need government to look after them.

They have no serious objection to authoritarianism or suppression of civil liberties, any more than an infant in the neonatal unit cares whether the hospital is somewhat authoritarian.

Will look out the Canadian stats.

  • That is scary.

      Have no fear.
Once the welfare state collapses Ferguson is going to look like a picnic.

      • Martin B

Look at the panic in the streets of Clayton County, Georgia after food stamps were cut off for just a day. Imagine a week, or a month…zombie apocalypse!

Welfare is totally immoral. The pope is wrong.

It’s just a switch that the government has to throw to start the riots at any time.

The truth shall set you free Liberals.

          • Clausewitz

Obama’s not worried about the next election. Throw that switch, let the riots begin, declare Martial Law, Obama’s President for life.

          • dance…dancetotheradio

Not even he can do that.
            But, PM Justin.
We live in an unserious country now.

          • Clausewitz

Ah, but what’s to stop him from trying??

        • John

Some of those gals with no money or food stamps have at least a 1,000 dollars worth of weave and relaxant on their heads.

Georgia isn’t running out of food stamps, it’s running out of White people.

    • BillyHW

      It’s Obamanomics.

    • Clausewitz

And there you have it. Obama has fundamentally changed the nation just like he said he would.

    • Blacksmith

I think it is truly sad to see what we have let happen here. This kind of thing is never on a referendum or up for a vote so the politicians buy the votes of the people who want this with my money and I can do nothing because I am outvoted by the bought votes.

  • Thanks, Obama.

  • BillyHW

Women voters want to be taken care of by the daddy state.

  • andycanuck

Record number not in the work force. Record number on ‘disability’ (after the unemployment insurance ran out). Record low participation rate. Record number on food stamps. All ignored by the MSM because of President Shit-head’s ethnicity and party.

  • More government or less government. That is the choice.

North or South Korea, that is the choice.

  • Norman_In_New_York

And how many work for the government? That is part of the problem.

    • John

Yeah…didn’t think of that. If you subtract the number of people working for public and para-public outfits ( millions and millions I’m sure), how many people remain that are employed by the private sector, the only sector generating gov’t revenue?

  • Justin St.Denis

Most Canadians are shocked by these stats, but informed Americans now all too well how far and fast the “welfare state” has made inroads into America.

Canadian stats are far, far lower than this.

    • canminuteman

Wait until the oil industry, the only industry that was still thriving in Canada collapses completely.

    • andycanuck

Canada’s unemployment rate is calculated similarly to the American U6 rate while the MSM only reports the much-lower U3 rate is one example. That’s going to change with Libs and Dips running almost all provincial governments and Justin in Ottawa.

  • john s

The stats are pretty meaningless and calling it welfare is just BS. There are so many different different income indexed rebates or refunds out there that are not actual welfare or gain or whatever they call it these days. In fact, the Canadian progressive tax code is one big example. Poor people pay lower taxes and are thus arguably subsidized by the high tax payers.
We need to look at these things rationally. The US and Canada both have problems with wages being low. There are a lot of folks trying to make do on less than 2500 a month (Canadian). My son works at a mill where the highest wage is 20 bucks an hour. The majority work for 14 to 16 bucks. They could quit I guess, to make way for some temporary foreign workers.
Instead of writing this off as lazy welfare people maybe we ought to deal with our devotion to policies that ensure an overabundance of workers and an employer driven wage structure. Immigration maybe? TFW’s (H1b’s in the US)?

  • Goldcoaster

obviously the answer to this problem is MORE. more unskilled immigration.
