Taliban seize British stronghold in Helmand as security unravels

A former British stronghold in Helmand has fallen to the Taliban just 12 months after UK combat troops left the province and civilians are fleeing the nearby provincial capital, fearing insurgents will soon move on the town.

The heavy fighting north west of Lashkar Gah and unravelling of security in areas UK troops fought bloody battles to secure comes days before the first anniversary of Britain’s withdrawal of combat troops from Afghanistan.

A lot of lives were lost for nothing, we should have levelled the place in 2001/02 and left, they’d still be picking up the pieces.

My son spent much of 2013 in Helmand (“Swinging Sangin”) and by the end of his deployment Taliban activity had dropped to zero.
It’s frustrating to see them return after they were literally wiped out in that part of the province and kicked entirely out of the battlespace.
They were gone as in zero activity and anti-Taliban graffiti in Sangin would stay up for weeks proving that they didn’t even have any sympathizers left willing to show their heads.
The Afghans then pissed it all away.

Does your son think it was “worth it”?

        Two answers to that question.

From a personal and professional development standpoint yes. He would compete* for selection if another slot opened up to go there in a combat role again within his battalion. There are just some things you can ONLY accomplish in an active war zone with an enemy that is honestly trying to kill you.

From a geopolitical standpoint, he thinks all Afghans are utterly worthless and will never amount to anything. He believes that all Afghans are genetically brain damaged and barely qualify (or maybe not) as human. They deserve nothing but our wrathful scorn.

*in his unit you must compete for the privilege of deploying, and if you are not almost an exemplary Marine then you never get to do anything “fun”.

I’d like to volunteer a Back To The Future rewriting of that headline.
