Turkey’s Grisly Dances with the Islamic State

On October 10, Turkey woke up to the worst single terror attack in its history. The twin suicide-bomb attack in Ankara killed 97 and injured nearly 250 people, with more than 60 of the wounded being treated in intensive care. As of October 14, no one had claimed responsibility, but all indications pointed to the Islamic State (ISIS, or IS) — the same jihadists Turkey’s Islamist government once helped logistically, in the hope that they would facilitate Syrian President Bashar al-Assad’s downfall and the establishment of an Islamist regime there

  • Then leave Turkey to its own devices.

It will regret the day it did not become a secularists state.

Actually Turkey was a secularist state for a while, and things worked pretty well. Islam is like a cancer in that one may go into remission (period of secularism in Turkey), but as long as it is not totally eradicated it will sooner or later return with a vengeance.

      • Now that Erdogan has gotten into bed wit the Islamists (or invited them in), it’s curtains for Turkey.

How long will it be before Turkey’s Kurds sever the southern and eastern 20% of the country to form a Kurdish republic united with their Iraqi and Syrian brethren?

Afghan shot dead trying to invade Bulgaria from Turkey.
Defending their borders. Bad, Bad Bulgaria.

  • tom_billesley

When news arrived of the death of an Afghan invader, the Bulgarian PM Boyko Borisov flew home from a Brussels meeting where an EU-Turkey deal was announced intended to stem the flow of migrants.

Some deal – apart from an expected cash sweetener, the concession that Turkey wrung from the EU is accelerated progress to visa easement for Turks. Turkey will tackle traffickers and “take measures” to reduce numbers. They’ll probably decide to allow passage only of Sunni Arabs migrants, and the EU will be taking more Sunni Turks. Win-win for Europe.
