Islamic State leaders ‘killed in air strike’ in western Iraqi town as Abu Bakr Baghdadi convoy hit

An air strike on a gathering of Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (Isil) members in a town in western Iraq on Sunday killed several leaders but the group’s top man, Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi, was not among them, hospital sources and residents said.

Earlier in the day, the country’s air force claimed it struck a convoy carrying the militant leader, who has declared himself the leader of a “caliphate” in areas it controls in Iraq and Syria, but he was not believed to be dead.

Iraq’s military said earlier that it had targeted a meeting of Islamic State leaders and a convoy carrying Baghdadi to the gathering in two separate air strikes.
