University of Pennsylvania religious studies prof Anthea Butler tweeted wishing that US prez candidate Ben Carson could get a “coon of the year” award.
Here’s a screenshot of that tweet, apparently deleted at Twitter.
But get this: In response to protests,
Prof. Justin McDaniel, chairman of the University of Pennsylvania’s religious-studies program, did not repond to Butler’s tweet but said she is a “valued colleague and faculty member.”

Back in the 1950s, frustrated housewives used to shout crap like this off the back washstand.
Well-meaning people chose to ignore them on the grounds that they were foolish and bitter, and had certainly not had the benefit of higher education.

Anthea Butler is Associate Professor of Religious Studies and Graduate Chair in the Department of Religious Studies at the University of Pennsylvania. Her most recent book, Women in the Church of God in Christ, Making A Sanctified World published on the University of North Carolina Press, chronicles the history of African American women’s religious lives, and civic engagement in the Church of God in Christ, the largest Pentecostal denomination in the United States.
