Russian cruise missiles fired at Syria ‘hit Iran’ as US warns Moscow it will suffer casualties

Four cruise missiles fired at Syria from a Russian ship in the Caspian Sea on Wednesday have crashed in Iran, US officials said on Thursday.

Russia has been firing cruise missiles over Iran into Syria in attacks on rebels fighting Bashar al-Assad for the past two days. US government sources said four of those launched on Wednesday had landed in Iran, though it was not clear exactly where or if there had been any casualties.

Moscow denied the claims. “In contrast to CNN we do not talk with reference to anonymous sources,” Major General Igor Konashenkov, a Russian defence ministry spokesman told Interfax. “We show the launch of our rockets and the targets they struck.
