Who Will Save Middle East Christians: Obama or Putin?

Few Western foreign policy analysts have taken seriously Vladimir Putin’s radical reorientation of Russia from communism back to Russian Orthodox Christianity.

Putin is perhaps uniquely qualified to discern that his nation’s identity has been for centuries within a spiritual, distinctly Christian narrative and that a violent rending of Russia’s historically religious roots led to utter disaster for the Russian peoples.

Son of a militant atheist and a pious mother, Putin lived through the collapse of the Soviet Union and the resurgence of capitalism as defined in Russian terms. Though raised a secularist, he is now a devout Christian in the Russian Orthodox tradition and has devoted himself to the advancement of Christianity and the repudiation of what he sees as Western decadence. While some may be dismissive of Putin’s Christian beliefs, there is no doubt that Christianity informs the way he now chooses to shape his own narrative and the story of his country.

Putin’s religious values are rooted in Russian Orthodoxy and personal religious experiences, including his wife’s car accident in 1993 and a life-threatening house fire in 1996. Just before a diplomatic trip to Israel, his mother gave him a baptismal cross. He said of the occasion, “I … put the cross around my neck. I have never taken it off since.”

RUSSIA DECLARES ‘HOLY WAR’ ON ISLAMIC STATE – While Obama sides with Christian-murdering “freedom fighters.”

The Orthodox Christian Church, which holds an important place in a resurgent Russia, has described its government’s fight against the Islamic State and other jihadi opposition groups in Syria as a “holy war.”

  • Putin is more to be trusted than Obama to defend Christians. And indeed, paradoxically, the West.

    • Oracle9

Exactly what I and my very few sane friends have been saying.

    • African

      Exactly so! Thank you!

    • Alain

You can add the pope to list of those refusing to defend the Christians there.

      • African

Yeah. The Pope and his decadent and godless Vatican.

      • Maggat

        Pity, isn’t it?

    • disqusW6sf

Would you expand that to include Jews?

  • Oracle9

Amazingly, Putin will be the one to clean up the mess caused by the professional malpractice of Obama and his administration.

Obama got his wish however, he was successful in his mission of making the US irrelevant.

This article by a former Israeli Ambassador, Michael Oren, is an excellent short analysis of Obama and Islam: http://foreignpolicy.com/2015/06/19/barack-obama-muslim-world-outreach-consequences-israel-ambassador-michael-oren/

Obama and the West in general are profoundly anti-Christ, pro-islam and pro-gay so definitely Putin and Russia are the best hope for the middle eastern Christians.

And let us hope that Harper wakes up from his delusions on this score. he has been completely suborned by the Ukrainian mafia in Canada.
Remember when he called Putin a “thug” to his face? Remember when silly Chris Alexander (who never saw a Muslim he didn’t feel compassion for) stood in front of the Russian consulate in Toronto and harangued Putin?

Now that we can see how quickly Putin can mount a military assault if he wants, it should be clear now that his is not doing it in Donbass, and he isn’t inching up (ever so slowly) to the Baltic states, Poland, Romania, etc., those hysterical fools.

      • Cheryl

He’s invaded the sovereign, independent countries of Georgia and the Ukraine, and has annexed territory from each of them. He may stop with them … and then again, he may not. The Baltic states have good reason to be worried (Poland, of course, has been the historical stomping ground of Russia from the time of Catherine the not so Great, through to the 1920 invasion, and the cynical and cruel landgrab of Stalin in WW2).

        • Ho Hum

Putin was not the aggressor in the Ukraine. Obama and the EU were behind the coup that toppled a democratically elected President and resulted in a civil war which forced Putin to annex the Crimea which was home to the Russian black sea fleet (what choice did he have). Putin is providing military support to the ethnic Russians inside the Ukraine who are under attack from Kiev. I see nothing wrong with that! Once again Canada is on the wrong side of a civil war conflict which is costing the lives on 1,000’s of innocent civilians.

          • Minicapt

… and next on stage at Just For Laughs …

      • African

You absolutely right. Harper should apologize to President Putin and his government.

        • Maggat

Harper’s stand on Ukraine was one of the few times I disagreed with him. Yes, Our prime Minister should swallow his pride and and endeavor to mend fences and realize that for the first time in history Russia may well and truly be on our side.

          • African

I agree with you Maggat. Let us hope the the NDP wins this coming election. To me Conservatives are not that different from the NDP or Liberals. They just dropped an Indian guy in Ontario who innocently suggested that “gays” could be reformed.

          • Petrilla

Ontarians lived under NDP in Ontario under Bob Rae. Never again.

          • Petrilla

I have very Christian friends who support Putin because he is the only leader in this sorry world who is defending Christians. Ask yourself, who else is?

  • tom_billesley
  • Norman_In_New_York

Now that we have a solid religious motive for Putin’s actions, I wonder how long his alliance with Iran is going to last before the ayatollahs start calling him the Not-So-Great Satan.

    • Alain

Yes, this will be interesting to see.

  • Blacksmith

I won’t be obutthole, he hates Christians which he has proven multiple times in his presidency!
