Russia preparing air strikes on Isil if US does not back deal to keep Assad

Vladimir Putin is preparing to attack Isil in Syria amid growing signs that Western leaders may support a Russian plan to allow Bashar al-Assad to remain in power in the country.

Russia has sent dozens of fighter jets and helicopter gunships to Syria as he steps up his support for Assad, the country’s president, in the fight against Isil jihadists.

Mr Putin is understood to have told America that he is prepared to authorise unilateral Russian air strikes on Isil targets if the US does not back his plans to take on the jihadists while allowing Assad to remain in power.

And just what does Putin think of the Kurds? Not giving them a homeland was perhaps the worst mistake of the Sykes – Picot lines.

As I understand it – from the link you provided (which is excellent!) The Saudi’s and Qatari’s want to build a pipeline to Europe running through Syria. Assad would not agree to the pipeline as he is allied with Iran and Russia and so the Gulf States along with the U.S. and NATO decided that “regime change” was needed in Syria. Obama wants the Saudi / Qatari pipeline to Europe built so as to undercut Russia.

      • Everyone Else

        Pipelines aren’t that important.

Oil tankers ship oil incredibly cheaply, especially with the drop in cost of oil. Also, ocean tankers run on fuel from oil. To compare, how much would it cost to truck bananas if trucks ran on bananas?

The ZeroHedge article is a mishmash of original reporting, bogus reporting, and conspiracy theory.

        • Then Putin would not care.

          • Everyone Else

I don’t think he wants Syria to fall to ISIS. I guess he’s being partly funded by outside sources. He has the military and he can take the diplomatic heat of supporting Assad. Maybe he’s trying to fill the vacuum left by USA abandonment. That part of the world needs a leviathan with military force ready to squelch problems.

          • No one does (except for maybe Obama).

Putin looks out for his own interests which is why I would not peg him as a saviour. The second he can get a pipeline built, I don’t think he will care if ISIS just moved further in Iraq.

      • Russia depends on this. Putin moves when it suits him.

Unlike the Pope, Putin fights Islam, hell, he sent troops around in Crimea to confiscate Islamic texts.

Well, Harper gave his best input into solving the problems of the world when he told Putin off. Way to go, Steve!

It is noteworthy that Netanyahu went to Moscow to confer with Putin. He apparently told Putin of Israel’s red lines and they agreed to keep their distance from each other and communicate if things got sensitive.

  • FactsWillOut

    Putin is gonna kill jihadists???!!!
    NATO must act now!!!

    • Xavier

      Somehow this is Israel’s fault.

Finally a country that manages the terrorists in the right directions will be in the Middle East , time for the US and and the rest of NATO to take a break and allow Russia to finish that job .

The Russians looked at those endless convoys flying that islamic flag and could not believe that America would not use them for training in air to ground attack. What an opportunity for A-10 and combat helicopters wasted by that feckless coward obama.
