Conservatives swing into lead, close in on majority government, new poll suggests #elxn42

MONTREAL—Stephen Harper’s Conservative party has taken a commanding lead in the federal election race, a new poll suggests.

With less than a month to go in the campaign, and heading into the first of three leaders debates, the Tories have moved ahead of their rivals with the support of 35.4 per cent of voters, according to the Ekos poll conducted for Montreal’s La Presse newspaper.

Justin Trudeau and the Liberals have 26.3 per cent support and the NDP has the backing of 24.5 per cent of respondents. The poll questioned 2,343 people between Sept. 17 and Sept. 22 and is considered accurate to within two percentage points, 19 times out of 20.

The results would seem to smash the notion of a three-way horserace that has been recorded in polls conducted through the first eight weeks of the election campaign.

There may also be some “shy tory” syndrome, where polls consistently underestimate the support for conservative parties.
Although that may be wishful thinking on my part.

Not too many people are using their home phone any more.

The ones that do really don’t want to take junk calls from pollsters.

I think they phone the same people all the time and predict a landslide for Smitherman!

I agree. We have caller display and simply do not bother answering these junk calls. I once in the past agreed to answer questions from a poll but got too annoyed by the type of questions. It was impossible to give my view due to the questions and how they were phrased. Since I don’t have time to waste I do not answer.

Hope you are right on this, and I am wishing the same as well.

Back in 1980, during the election between Ronald Reagan and Jimmy Carter, the polls had the two candidates tied tied going into election day. But Reagan won by about 8-9 percentage points. Turns out many were to ashamed to say they were voting for Reagan.

I am hoping that it is the niqab issue that is tipping things here. This could be a real sleeper. But at this stage, I’ll take anything to help Harper out.

Or conservatives are smart enough to know that answering a poll over the phone gets you on a list.

the Star, EKOS.. long way to go

    • kkruger71

Noticed the Star today is focusing on an online poll about trustworthiness that Harper lost. Not a dumb tactic, get several polls going per day, with several different methods, and focus on the one that gives you a response you like.

Duffy Channel Power&Propaganda must have forced TrueDope cheerleader Rosemarie Barton to report this.. she quickly dismissed this poll..looked disgusted

  • NDP and/or LP = disaster for Canada; CPC = only hope for respite from the Islamic onslaught.
