#TIFF and the #Tommunist Manifesto: Canadian actors shouldn’t be seen or heard off screen

Canadian celebrities at the 2015 Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF) 2015 — notably actors Rachel McAdams, Ellen Page and the curmudgeonly, decrepit Donald Sutherland — bombed badly this week.

Not onscreen, but off, by supporting the appallingly stupid, Naomi Klein-penned Leap Manifesto.

(Nicknamed the “TommunistManifesto” by conservative wags in “honour” of supposedly centrist NDP leaderThomas Mulcair.)

The reputations of McAdams, Page and Sutherland weren’t the only ones hurt by association with this manifestly moronic manifesto.

  • As I said before, the salons of the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries haven’t gone out. They have evolved into press conferences at film festivals.

When I discover the left wing beliefs of my favourite musicians and actors I feel much better about stealing their work.

    • Blacksmith

Damn I hadn’t thought about that. It is kinda Karmic aint it.

    • WalterBannon

they don’t believe in borders or property, except of course for themselves

  • Clausewitz

Seems that the role Sutherland plays in the Hunger Games series of movies isn’t really acting on his part. Just Donald being Donald.

    • David Murrell

Seeing Donald Sutherkand, Canadian actors shouldn’t be seen on screen either.

      • Clausewitz

Didn’t he also play Bethune? The Mao loving doctor who would refuse to help enemy injured.

  • Surele Surele

OT, but not entirely. My husband’s former boss, a card caring NDP member, earning well over $100,000 (and that in the nineties) never had moral qualms to smuggle stuff from abroad and not declaring it at the border. And didn’t even blink an eye, or saw the irony in the fact, that he bought property somewhere in S. America, had the cheap labour there build his house, and hired maids and butlers on a cheap. A typical hypocrite, never tired of lecturing his subordinates, during THEIR lunch break, about the merits of socialism and how we should tax the rich more.

    • Blacksmith

It is pretty much their modus operandi.

    • I believe it. The thinking with these people is always “The system is hopelessly corrupt! Of course I’m exploiting it! The Koch brothers are doing it too! But come the Revolution…”

It’s millennial. Utopian if not apocalyptic. When the world is corrected, The System overthrown, my perfect morality will manifest itself; but, in the meantime, I’m forced to be sleazy… which is not my fault…

You get a similar thing with Muslims. Everything is the fault of America and Britain invading Muslim countries. And, obviously, Israel. Always, always Israel. So, for example, if you say “look, why don’t you guys try to do something to sort out Syria?” the answer is “You are responsible for all our problems!!!” And that will always be the answer. No matter what we do or don’t do. Until the end of time. Which I’m looking forward to because I’m so sick of this sh*t.

It’s why I get disgusted by people who spend their time vacationing in Cuba. My tongue bled from biting it so hard last winter listening to coworkers stories of their winter holidays.

        • LauraS

It astonishes me the number of people that have no qualms about vacationing in Cuba. How can they enjoy a holiday surrounded by desperation? These Canadians seem quite willing to overlook the evident lack of freedom and sheer misery in Cuba in favour of nice, sandy beaches and low vacation prices.

          • andycanuck

The ones who are political (and not just LIVs who don’t think about it) convince themselves that the people are better off than they were/would have been before the Revolution.

          • Alain

Based on personal experience they remain blind to the desperation of the majority of Cubans. I suspect they remain in some state approved area and never really see the real Cuba. How many times have I had to listen to some idiot while awaiting a hair cut at the barber’s who had vacationed in Cuba and boldly claims how great their life is now, especially their health care. Those are times when I wished I had brought earplugs.

          • El Martyachi

.. really that applies to plenty of vacation spots, not just Cuba. How many crap countries DON’T have special penned-in distorted-reality zones for 1st worlders?
But yes.. the Cuban vacationers are most insufferable.

      • Surele Surele

” Utopian if not apocalyptic. When the world is corrected, The System overthrown, my perfect morality will manifest itself’ – this is a great observation. It’s like you lived in a socialist country like Poland, or something.

This brought to mind an old Czech joke: I don’t fear Communism, I have cancer.

        • My mother’s family were western Ukrainian (Austro-Hungarian/Polish peasants). I was never raised to be a fanatic. Although I was old enough, I simply have no memory of the Berlin Wall coming down. Nobody shook me up in the middle of the night and said “Look at this!!!” It didn’t register. No fanatical lefty academic could say the same about his kids. I know. I’ve met these people.

I like this. It’s originally P.J.O’Rourke (From Back When He Was Funny):

This is exactly the joke that used to be told in the Soviet Union. An old guy’s wife tells him to go to the butcher shop and get some meat. He goes to the butcher shop and stands in line for hours. Finally the butcher says, “We’re out of meat.” The old guy blows his top. He yells, “I am a worker! I am a proletarian! I am a veteran of the Great Patriotic War! I have fought for socialism all my life, and now you tell me you’re out of meat! What kind of a system is this?! You are fools! You are thieves! . . . ” A big man in a trench coat comes up to the old guy and says, “Comrade, Comrade, not so loud. In the old days you know what they would do if you said such things.” The big man in the trench coat makes a pistol motion with his hand. He says to the old guy, “Calm down and go home.” The old guy shrugs and leaves. He comes back empty-handed, and his wife says, “What’s the matter, are they out of meat?” “Worse than that,” says the old guy, “they’re out of bullets.”

  • Norman_In_New_York

This reminds me of a Johnny Carson joke in which President Reagan complained about Ed Asner’s support for the Sandinistas, saying, “What does an actor know about foreign policy?”

  • DMB

The difference between wealthy celebrities and wealthy entrepreneurs is entrepreneurs use their money to employee people while celebrities use their money for their own personal use. That alone makes wealthy entrepreneurs qualified to comment on issues that directly affect people’s everyday lives unlike celebrities.

Know-me Klein trys to make the three stooges look like her comedy acts straight-men

  • Cat-astrophe

Canada’s Hollywood actors, what can you say?
How about, you have not lived here the majority of your lives, but don’t mind telling us how we should think. I think you have lost the right to do so.
One question, have they paid Canadian income tax their whole acting career?
Not that it makes a difference.
It’s like, “old man take a look at your life…..”

  • Exile1981

Honestly hollywood types are rich because they are deluded enough that they can slip into a fantasy world. The better the actor the easier it has to be for them to seperated from reality.

So why would anyone take political advice from someone who can’t differentiate between reality and fantasy. Add in that these holiwood types live in gated communities where the rules don’t apply. Look at home watering lawn rules are waved for holiwood stars.

  • DD_Austin

Actors are usually total dolts, I must pause while I try a think of a smart one……

Kevin Sorbo wasn’t an idiot when Ezra interviewed him at some ski fundraiser
he actually had more than a clue about oil….
    That’s all I got….

    • El Martyachi

There’s plenty who aren’t (idiots) but if they wantsta keep workin they gotsta keeps their traps shut.

    • Clausewitz

They’re basically parrots with an agent.
