Ontario’s new road safety rules: Why some are unrealistic, unfair

Kathleen Wynne’s government has finally addressed an issue Ontarians care about: Traffic and road safety. Some new regulations took effect September 1, while others kick in in the new year.

That’s why cyclists will never be licensed in Ontario.

As someone that is a pedestrian or passenger far more often than a driver, I still fully agree with the idea that cyclists should really be cracked down on for causing so many of the problems. It’s not even some or the occasional one, but the vast majority of the ones I see on the road that constantly break laws and cause issues. Almost to a person they want to switch on a dime, right now I’m a vehicle, now it’s handier if I’m a pedestrian, ok, now I’m a vehicle again. Weaving in and out of traffic, swing onto the sidewalk to use the crosswalk, then use the pedestrian crossing at the corner, then go back onto the road and demand cars swing out to pass. I see stuff like this daily.

Hate to say it…but I would suspect that a majority of the readers of this blog did in fact vote for Wynne. I always thought it a cop-out when people would tell me (when I was younger)–“I don’t agree with their platform…but the guy who was running for the Conservatives is a total loser…and the guy running for the Liberals/NDP is a really good guy”. When I would follow up with the question “well why didn’t you vote for the party that would allow you to pay less in taxes…” They would look at me with either a look of total confusion or give me one of those “well taxes are the price we pay for civilization” type of answers.

I think if a Wynne voter read this blog their head would spin and spew green vomit.

You apparently lack some understanding of Canadian demographics, and that is reflected in our Elections laws.

  • Being on a bike is the liberal equivalent of a “get out of jail” card.

But if you use it at a stupid time, you are “dead right”.

Liberal conundrums like this are beyond discussion.

Cyclists don’t bug me at all. This law about pedestrians is insane, though.

in the video where it showed a passenger opening a door on a cyclist… if cyclists want to be accorded the benefits of “vehicle status” then in the situation in the video the cyclist should be charges and fined for passing on the right. the fine should be to suffer what i lived through yesterday while in rush hour traffic. 7 minutes behind a cyclist in white spandex biker shorts, no underwear, waving his hairy fat arsehole in my face. Also, licence the bicycles just like cars, and make them pay. cyclists are a scourge to society.
