Vegemite being used to make homemade alcohol in dry communities: reports

Vegemite could be ending up in more than sandwiches, following reports of the yeast extract being used to make homemade alcohol in dry communities across Queensland and the Northern Territory.

The problem has been described as prolific in some areas in the Northern Territory, with reported instances of people buying up to twenty jars of Australia’s favourite spread at a time, for the brewing of homemade alcohol.

of course marmite is the real deal but even so I can’t imagine how gross and salty the product must taste, what is to stop them just using bread machine yeast ?

    • Good question.

      • dance…dancetotheradio

Yeah, doesn’t yeast keep growing as long as it is fed?

        • ntt1

          yes like bureaucracies

        • Drunk_by_Noon

Yep, that’s why you really don’t need much more than corn, wheat, or rice flour, and some sugar to get every last bit of alcohol out of that yeast, and there ya go.

          • dance…dancetotheradio

the yeast makes the alcohol out of the sugar

          • Drunk_by_Noon

It will make methanol anyways, the sugar just gets you a better yield faster before the yeast dies off from all the alcohol.
You can make a still in your kitchen.

Better not try that in Great Britain.
Customs and Excise will jump on you.

      Too complicated for the “natives”?

    • Drunk_by_Noon

      Not a darned thing.

Perhaps the yeast in the vegimite is closer to the yeast in alcohol than the different strain used in bread.

Making alcohol with bread yeast is nasty and undrinkable unless very desperate.

  • Well, it is yeast.

“We never eat cookies, for cookies have yeast
And one little bite makes a man lie a beast.
Oh can you imagine a sadder disgrace
Than a man in the gutter with crumbs on his face?”

“Away, away, with rum, by gum…..”

That is nice– but vodka rules.

halal crap is what it is <:o)

If you want to make hooch, jungle juice, moonshine or whatever you call it, it’s not so hard, that if you took away the Marmite that you couldn’t easily find another substitute. I’m assuming they are using it for the yeast.
Making a respectable still is not exactly the Manhattan Project.

Ug — refine yourself or not.

      • Drunk_by_Noon

As an experiment I once made my own batch, but that was back in the 1990’s.
It was drinkable, but in small batches it’s actually cheaper to go to the store and buy much better quality.

Get ready for the new Powdered Alcohol to come to Toronto from California.
Teens are going to parties with soda pop or .05 Near Beers and sprucing them up the powder , so far it’s not illegal to in posession of the powder .

Don’t be shock if the Liberal Progressives and TDSB add this to their programs like the condoms to mete out to students because they’ll just use it anyway and it for their safety to have them consume booze in the school.
