Pax-Obama: US-trained Syrian rebels say they won’t fight al-Qaeda

Embattled US-trained rebels in Syria pledged they would not fight al Qaeda affiliate Jabhat al-Nusra on Tuesday, even as Washington promised to ramp up air support in their defence.

Division 30, the first rebel faction to incorporate graduates of the US-led Train and Equip program, released a statement condemning a series of attacks by Jabhat al-Nusra in northern Syria over the past week that have decimated the group.

Nevertheless, the faction said, “it would not be dragged into any side battle with any faction” and that “it did not and will not fight Jabhat al-Nusra,” adding that its only targets were forces loyal to Syrian President Bashar al-Assad as well as the Islamic State in Iraq and the Levant (Isil).
