Al-Qaeda in Syria boasts of defeating US’s trained rebels

A Dutch Islamist fighter has boasted of how his al-Qaeda-linked group took on and defeated the US’s favoured rebel group in Syria, in a new humiliation for Britain and the West’s strategy for the country’s civil war.

The fighter, in an online statement, said Jabhat al-Nusra, the al-Qaeda affiliated group that is fighting both Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (Isil) and the regime of Syria’s President Bashar al-Assad, would not tolerate America’s “long filthy capitalistic arm” interfering in the war.

Division 30, the brigade whose members were the first to pass through the Pentagon’s training programme for rebels from northern Syria, has withered in the face of a barrage of attacks in recent weeks.
