Ottawa ‘blindsided’ by Fiat Chrysler recall and $105M fine

Transport Minister Lisa Raitt said she still doesn’t know the impact on Canada of a major recall of Fiat Chrysler vehicles in the U.S. that is resulting in a $105 million US fine for the company.

“I simply was left blindsided on this issue,” Raitt told CBC News, when asked how many vehicles in Canada might be affected by a recall of millions of vehicles in the U.S. announced Monday.

The U.S. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration fined the Italian-American automaker a record $105 million for poorly executing 23 vehicle safety recalls covering more than 11 million defective vehicles over several years.

Fiat lives up to it’s name yet again.
    Fix It Again Tony.

Not that Chrysler is a byword for reliability, either. At least they got the synergy right on that merger.

      • Man this is a horrendous recall no wonder the Chrysler Prez was making noises about leaving Canada a couple of weeks back.

My favourite Chrysler was my Dad’s 1976 Newport Custom.
Switching between that and my Mom’s 1978 Honda Civic was arresting.
You couldn’t make out in a Honda but man that Newport was roomy.

    As goes does Brampton

    • DD_Austin

Our political parties let their multicultural dog shit on Ontario’s lawn
in Brampton, giving the word new meaning

      Brampton: a huge crap.
Dude, I just took a huge Brampton.
I just took a trip to the Brampton….

Oh well, fewer CAW members will be vacationing in Communist Cuba where the nation jailed gays with AIDS. So much for the Unions that fight for human rights and justice.

I blame global warming, the Jews and our treatment of natives.

    • zee

I think blaming the Jews automatically covers everything, global warming, global cooling, treatment of natives, treatment of immigrants etc.

I owned a Plymouth Voyager back in the mid 90’s – it was my first and LAST Chrysler vehicle. Over 50 warranty claims – 3 transmissions, 3 AC compressors, front wiper motor, rear wiper motor, heater blower motor…but the best was when I pulled the emergency brake release and it came off in my hand.
Those assholes at Chrysler/Fiat deserve what ever the govt. throws at them!

I have an 11 year old Dodge Caravan and put over 200,000 km the last 7 years since bought. Only put in a couple radiators and normal oil, filter and brakes. Best reliability I’ve ever had. Weird but true.

My 4 GM’s have been fairly brutal. Think I’m turning Japanese again next year.

        Do you really think so?

Ford is no better. One 1 ton burned down at 109K another blew the motor at 190K. +/- $120K worth of trucks for less than 300K of travel.

I had a Fiat sports car in the early 1970’s, worst car I’ve ever owned. I’d never purchase another Fiat.

Fiat-Chrysler US failed to make sufficient and suitable donations?

We have to pay big money to elected officials to make sure we get the best people/S.
