NY Times: Qur’an manuscript discovery “a joyful moment for a faith that has struggled”

There is a great deal that is questionable about this “discovery,” as I showed in this article. Nonetheless, the mainstream media is making a big deal of it, and this effusion of unbridled New York Times front page enthusiasm warrants closer examination. Clearly mainstream media outlets see this as a chance to write positively about Islam — a chance they seldom, if ever, pass up — and to present their favorite religion in a favorable light, and so who cares if the story is full of holes?

  • Dana Garcia

That story got front-page treatment on the NYTimes today, with a respectful photo of the special murder manual.

    • Yusuf_Al_Kafir

Not too surprisingly, Canada’s version of the NYT, the Toronto Star, wasted a half a page on this story.

What leaves the worst taste in my mouth is the article’s AP author repeatedly uses the phrase ‘the Prophet Muhammad’ as if he is everybody’s prophet.

      • eMan14

They have to use “the Prophet”, in describing Muhammad because 500 million people in Islam are also called Muhammad.

        • Yusuf_Al_Kafir

Dammit if that doesn’t make a little bit of sense, eMan.

Way to ruin my rant, buddy. 😉

Seriously though, the media should say ‘the Islamic Prophet Muhammad’ just as they do when referring to ‘the Mormon prophet Joseph Smith’ .

          • Minicapt

At least they haven’t taken up the usage “pbuh”.

          • I agree with you.

They do not say The Son of God Jesus when they refer to him, or even The Christian Son of God Jesus, even though many individuals are called Jesus!

          • eMan14

I know what you mean though… as Avi said below… they only refer to Jesus as Jesus.

    • The Times is a Mexican Newspaper.

      • David Murrell

The Times is a pro-war crimes newspaoer.

    • Seneca III

Re. the Quranic pages allegedly found in Birmingham. If they are genuine and as old as claimed then there is a reasonable chance that they might contain some of the Satanic Verses. Now, wouldn’t that be interesting?

  • Petey

Progressives are not just neutral toward Islam – they love it. The question is, why?

    • Yusuf_Al_Kafir

Because the progressive Westerners and the followers of Islam have the same goal: the end of Western civilization.

    • If it undermines the West, then its good. The Left is one Big Daddy Issue.

      • ntt1

daddy issue ? and here i was figuring it was brutal toilet training…

  • ntt1

the CBC gorgons have been burbling happily about this issue all day, its being treated as a reaffirmation of the death cult

    • David Murrell

Show me an Islamic-driven war crime, and I will show you CBC News journalist cheerleading the crime.

  • mobuyus

    Again with the Goat abuse.

  • Gary

Next we’ll hear how a Mosque was found on the Moon .

  • BillyHW

Is this the same city that 9/11 happened?

  • Canadian

    Just burn it.

  • phuque uguugle

What Canada next, then the U.S.A. Australia, New Zealand. F–king idiots I’ve got a quran in the toilet, big deal.

  • Aawww… poor Muslims.

If they lost their faith, as Ayaan Hirsi Ali did, what would the New York Times say then?

  • Barrington Minge

Wrong – it’s actually the menu from a Syrian Takeaway…D’oh!!

  • Excellent, rigorous analysis by Robert Spencer, as usual.

Also on European TV channels the “discovery” was presented as a joyful piece of news, the dhimmi announcer putting on a beaming smiling face and reporting the information as fact without any critical effort telling all that it proves the divine source of the Koran!

    • Alex

Truly insane – they are blind to the absurdity of their position. They’ll prosecute someone for questioning “orthodox” climate change, but happily promote the idea of this invisible Allah fellow sending an incoherent, self-contradictory instruction manual down from the skies, 1400 years ago.

Just as Islam trumps the gay/transgendered movement, it clearly trumps science and rationality, in progressives’ minds, at least. Too weird (shaking head).

      • Yes – trumping is the word for it.

But the motive is, I think, just fear – the journalists are intimidated to a degree they dare not admit, and prefer to “rejoice” with those who threaten their very existence let alone profession rather than admit their own cowardice to themselves.

  • ed

    7th century bog paper !!!!!!!!!!!

  • marty_p

Meanwhile the most important biblical analysis since the Dead Sea Scrolls got no mention:

Lest it be used as further proof that Jews inhabited Israel before the Palestinians.

  • Hard Little Machine

It will be very funny if the scientists or whatnot decide it predates the existence of Mohammed. The lower edge of their own estimates indicates that it could predate the commonly held date of Mo’s birth. How can all perfect Muslim things contradict one another? The rioting will be entertaining at any rate.
