Vegan Diet Subjects Baby to Severe Malnutrition

The vegan parents of an 11-month-old Italian baby are under investigation after their son was rushed to hospital suffering severe malnutrition.

…Doctors said the baby was severely malnourished and showed signs of deficiency in vitamin B12, which is found in foods including fish, meat, eggs and milk.

“He could neither crawl nor sit himself up,” said Giovanni Federico, a paediatrician at the hospital.

Interestingly, some religious cults provide initiates with vegan diets, since the lack of high-protein content and essential nutrients makes them less able to think clearly.

Which, when you think about it, explains a lot of things you hear from vegans.

    • El Martyachi

The only genuine fringe cult member I got close to (so far) was vegan.

    • Makes sense

    • ntt1

the very few vegans i am forced to associate with, all display the signs of the zealot, if they weren’t mortifying the flesh with silly diets then they would be wearing cicatrices or flogging themselves bloody. The good point is they have no energy to really be dangerous ,just to themselves.

A few years ago when I was a federal employee (yes, I have a guilty past but I’ve left the public service for the real world now!) a young woman a few offices down from me had a poster with an adult female cow and (presumably) its calf beside it. The caption was something like “Don’t take my baby away from me: Go Vegan!”

I resisted saying something but it was hard. I wanted to say something like “But they taste SO good!” to her. Or maybe just offer her half of my hamburger, you know, to promote employee camaraderie.

        • I have a lot of sympathy for vegetarianism, but veganism is totally nuts. And to a baby? I don’t have words for these horrible parents.

          • Alex

Never cared much for peanuts; cashews are alright though.

          • ntt1

I DO have a tray of juicy wheat grass for the cats but they graze on it as a meat supplement and i suspect because it helps with their projectile vomiting of hairballs. could this be true of vegans? damned it i want to find out

          • Yeah. They like puking.

          • Justin St.Denis

How about “unfit”? That describes those parents very well, I think.

          • Frances

At the very least, the female vegan should have been seriously nursing her child for at least three years. Eleven months: all our grandbrats were sitting up much earlier, and a couple of them were walking. Sturdy, healthy omnivores, all of them.

        • ntt1

nobody eats a calf, that would not be thrifty a yearling perhaps but usually a two year old. that is typical .

          • canminuteman

Not male dairy calves, they get consumed in pretty short order. There is no point growing up a male Holstein, because there isn’t much meat on one, and unless the cows have calves, there is no milk from them.

          • ntt1

I understand the male calves are given the liberal mp treatment (neutering) then are fattened for a year as burger meat.

          • canminuteman

You could be right, I’m not a farmer, I just like meat and dairy products.

          • ntt1

once the balls are off they fatten up just as nice as the cows maybe that’s why bruce is keeping his tackle intact

          • Exile1981

I have a friend who claims that he gained all the extra weight he is carrying because he got a vasectomy.

          • ntt1

no Vasectomy does nothing to change hormonal levels it just prevents spermatozoa from proceeding to the shooting gallery. Its a great excuse though.

          • Exile1981

I agree but it makes a great excuse.

          • Frances

            That’s a veal, isn’t it?

          • canminuteman

            Yes it is.

  • Exile1981

You can not get B12 from anything but animals. Humans can not convert vegetables into this critical vitamin. It effects mental ability and neurological function, those who are not getting enough can suffer severe mental issues. Even vegans who take supplements for B12 are still getting it from an animal source.

I think vegans should be banned from fostering such an unhealthy lifestyle on their children.

    • ntt1

not so different from anti vax morons

    • terrence

You only get gelatin from meat, too. We do not need much; but vegans do not get it, unless they supplement – joints, skin, teeth finger nails and toenails all need it.

Denise Minger was a vegan for over twenty years and saw the light (she had bad health, etc). Her web site is http://rawfoodsos.com/. She also decimated the so-called “China Study” by T. Colin Brown, as well as “Forks over Knives”.

  • Petey

Isn’t it darn annoying when reality refuses to conform to your progressive worldview?

  • ntt1

from what i have read about Kwasi Ochre and malnourishment’s impact on development of a child, that poor kid might already be damaged beyond restoration.

  • The Butterfly

Why do parents inflict their neuroses on their children?

    • Waffle

And on cats. Please don’t forget cats. Cats can die from a vegan diet. We need meat!! Our bodies convert the protein in meat to Vitamin C.

      • ntt1

my cats like to graze on juicy thick sweet grass but only as an emetic, i’m afraid. But then the idea of a vegan diet gets me nauseous too.

        • Waffle

I used to be an unbridled carnivore, however, as the body ages, it becomes more and more difficult to indulge. I have gout, and the pain from kidney stones, you don’t want to know. Haven’t had a stone or a problem for about 15 years now as I have cut my consumption of red meat and red wine (yum) drastically. About once or twice a month, I treat myself to a thick, juicy steak.

          • ntt1

I ,m happy eating all kinds of fish, poultry and strange meats found at chinese supermarkets ( 10 quail for $6.00) while i enjoy red meats it is getting stupid expensive so I have cut back. love my beer though(liquid bread)

          • Justin St.Denis

And a 12 oz. can of light beer is only about 160 calories – far less than one would think! That means a tall boy clocks in at about 225 calories.

          • ntt1

I enjoy craft beers right now I am liking a german wheat called Hacker- Pschorr, no idea what the calories are but I work it off by thinking about long walks

          • Justin St.Denis

I think you have to think harder to work off darker ales, stouts and porters.

          • ntt1

with the caveat of course that extremely heavy thinking can lead to raging thirst . this is why justin’s back room boys are happy with a 6 pack of O’Doul’s ….for the month.

          • Justin St.Denis

Which “Justin” would that be? I am a Sapporo man myself. Japanese beers are easier on my digestive tract, for some reason.

          • Trudeau.

          • ntt1

why the great Canadian hair apparent, turdo la doo,of course sapporo has a lot of malted rice in its wort maybe your not good with cereal based beers, try some of the lighter mexican brews they use lots of rice too.

          • Bataviawillem

Gout, I feel for you, I had some bouts with it myself, it is brutal.

          • Waffle

Thanks. No problems for past 15 years. Had stones sand blasted. No medications. Reduced red meat, red wine (that was hard), but refuse to give up cheese although I don’t eat a lot of it.

          • ntt1

is your gout medication induced? or just an over abundance of oxalic acid? my sister developed it but it went away with medication changes. horrible affliction.

  • Justin St.Denis

Every vegan I have ever met or had to deal with looked ill and tired, and was crazy/unbalanced in some very obvious way. I mean, every single one! No exceptions!

I can understand vegetarians who are lacto-ovo friendly, but veganism is simply weird.

    • Exile1981

I have know a guy who went vegan to score with a girl in college. He lost nearly 100lbs and looked like death warmed over before she moved on to a new guy. He admitted later he just about killed himself over her and it wasn’t worth it.

  • terrence

This is the best use of vegetables, in my opinion

  • Children in Third World countries die because they cannot get foods that will save their lives. What does it says when parents deliberately withhold them?
