Parents angry after eight-year-old daughter told to cover up and put on a top at city pool

GUELPH, Ont. — Nearly 25 years after a woman strolled through the streets of Guelph to win the right to walk topless, an eight-year-old girl who took her shirt off to take a dip in a wading pool was told to cover up by municipal staff in the southwestern Ontario city.

Cory McLean said his daughter Marlee and three step-brothers all stripped to the waist Saturday but only she was told to put on a shirt by a lifeguard, who cited city policy that prohibits girls over the age of four going topless at city pools.

Another one of those “why is this even news” stories, a lot of which seem to come from my part of the province for some reason.
To the mother, so what if the kid is underage and not “sexualized” yet, as she was quoted saying in another article, why not teach her a healthy level of modesty at a young age?

    • Justin St.Denis

A four-year-old girl? What kind of mind are you hiding inside that skull?

      • Drunk_by_Noon

I once read that most Canadians are sexually mature by the age of 4.

        • Ouch;)

        • Justin St.Denis

          ROFLMAO

No, not ‘Canadians’. You misread that. It said ‘Newfoundlanders”!

        • David Murrell

This is certainly true for children attending day care or school in Kathleen Wynne’s province.

      • kkruger71

Not sure if you are just trolling or not.
The policy is 4, the girl in the story is 8. By that age some girls will have started developing, so rather than get into a picking and choosing who scenario, the city has adopted a policy that assures it will kick in before any of them do. My point was if they are going to have to follow the policy for the rest of their lives, why not just have them do so at a young age, rather than having to change what is taught for the first few years?

      • The girl is 8 not 4.

        • Justin St.Denis

Big diff. A child is a child. And in what century is Guelph living? Bare breasts are not “porn” nor are bare breasts “indecent” in any way. I’m in my 50s, for pity’s sake, and have been seeing bare boobs on beaches for the better part of 40 years. What planet do you people live on? Bare boobs stopped being controversial decades ago in the civilized Western World. Is everybody becoming sharia-compliant suddenly?

          WTF?

Take the Victorian Corsets off your minds, folks. “The present” really is not that scary.

          • Drunk_by_Noon

And THAT is the difference between America and Canada, even through this is a Canadan news story.
The first set of “bare boobs” I ever saw was also at the beach, but the boob’s owner was getting arrested by two L.A. County Sheriff’s Deputies for what I assume was an indecent exposure rap.

          • Waffle

IMHO, they’re indecent if they’re saggy rather than perky.

        • dukestreet

So what. since it is not against the law for a female of any age to go topless, why is the city doing this? it’s bad enough that we have to put up with Islamic swimming times and suits. We shouldn’t have to deal with this as well.

          • Justin St.Denis

Precisely my point, too. But sexualizing little girls to this degree is simply sick.

    • FactsWillOut

“…why not have the state teach her a healthy level of modesty at a young age?”
      FIFY.

  • Clink9

What father wouldn’t want the daughter to wear a top?

    • Justin St.Denis

A father without any pedophilic thoughts in his head when he looks at anybody’s little toddlers and children. Hopefully, you are sterile.

      • No need for that Justin.

        • Justin St.Denis

Excuse me? I am pointing out a neurological and psychological fact, BCF. If the truth cuts too close to the bone, well then………

          • Drunk_by_Noon

I didn’t let my daughter go topless at any age.

          • Justin read the comments you are out of line here. There is no call for a personal attack.

      • Tom Forsythe

So anyone who disagrees with you is a pedophile? You are the one who wants little girls to run around half-naked.

        • Justin St.Denis

LOL You are a very silly Skippy.

      • reidjr

Say they said ok you can keep the top off and something did happen then what.

        • FactsWillOut

          LOL.
So, you’re a blame the victim kinda guy?

          • reidjr

No what I am saying if the family would likely have been outraged.

          • FactsWillOut

            So?
Nothing to do with wearing a shirt or not. Everything to do with pervs.

  • Justin St.Denis

What an archaic, insulting and dirty-minded policy Guelph has regarding this. The university is a well respected agricultural sciences centre. So this must be the “Guelph political and social elites” that are dirty-minded, child-hating, archaic and sexist. Good to know. I will pop over to post my opinion on their local MSM website if I can.

Always name and shame social and political troglodytes when you can. That is MY policy.

  • Maggat

Any bets that a complaint came from a certain exploding (figuratively and literally speaking) subset of Guelph’s population.

    • The story doesn’t indicate any complaint was filed, it seems the city staffer acted to enforce an existing rule.

However I note the Parks and Rec spokesman stated that the rules are designed to respect the “cultural norms” of others.

  • The Butterfly

What’s bizarre is a boy can’t go with a t-shirt on for “safety” reasons.

    • Justin St.Denis

Somewhat contradictory. Sexism makes people stupid and contradictory. Oh how I wish my young daughter was there now to give them a piece of her mind. If it was a nice day and she was in the park, she would doubtless bare her own spectacular boobs to illustrate her point.

OMG canuckistanis are so provincial/parochial/backwards. Sometimes I bless the day I was born with dual citizenship……. And I bless my wife for insisting that our children enjoy the benefits of dual citizenship as well. As such, we all have a few more options than most. For sure, the local puritanical realization of the dystopian Handmaid’s Tale world that some would seem to espouse rather freaks me out….

Public law says women can go topless. Public institutions must conform to public laws.

    • reidjr

Key word women a 8 year old is a girl and public institutions can set there own policys.

      • FactsWillOut

No, public institutions are public. If it was a privately owned pool, then the owners can decide. If it’s paid for by taxpayers, then all the public are welcome, so long as they obey the law.
Go and peddle your sharia elsewhere.

        • reidjr

I take great offense for you to suggest I support sharia law I don’t look at my past posts not once have I given any support to sharia law in fact its a awful thing and needs to be stopped.
Now with public buildings yes city’s etc can set there own policys for example a in Ottawa all public buildings have a strict code shirts and pants required take the court house its public but shirts and pants are required.

          • FactsWillOut

            For both sexes.
If men don’t have to wear tops, then women don’t either, according to Ontario law.
Setting one rule for women that men are exempt from is quite similar to sharia.

          • dance…dancetotheradio

If it’s Ontario, they should have claimed the girl is transgender and sued for a million dollars.

          • FactsWillOut

Why didn’t I think of that?

I figure if each family of an 8 year old girl did it in each pool they could find, well, we could bankrupt the province in a year, instead of 5 years as Wynne is doing, but the money would go to citizens, not unions. It’s Wynne/win!

          • dance…dancetotheradio

But, that only gives me five years to make another eight year old girl.
            I’d have to adopt.

          • FactsWillOut

Maybe you could rent one from the Children’s Aid Society?
Actually, they pay you, I think.
            Wynning! (Charlie Sheen rip off).

    • Gettingby

Does that same law apply to those minors that post or send topless photos of themselves to others? Aren’t some charged with distributing child pornography? Or is that just in America?

      • FactsWillOut

Here, it depends on the recipient. I remember when the age of consent for a girl was 14, in the 80’s. Even now, a 17-yr old can sleep with a 14-yr old.

        • Clink9

I thought Harper changed that to 16?

          • FactsWillOut

            Maybe he did.
The age of consent is now 18.
